I went down to immigration to talk to the folks about the babopalooza and my sitch.
To get to the root of my question, I (hope to be/) am re-signing with EPIK. The immigration officer told me that my visa can simply be renewed for a year. That indicates to me that I don't have to do another visa run, or get all my requisite paperwork sent to me from abroad.
I assume that this immi officer knows what he is talking about: Has anyone else heard of this? |

Any job, public school or hagwon where you resign for another year, as a continuation of employment you do not need to go on a visa run...
it is only when you are changing sponsors(schools) that you need to go...
I have been at one school for 2 years and didn't have to go anywhere....
they just wrote an extension on the back of my ARC.. |

If you are renewing at the SAME job for another year then it is:
a trip to the immigration office,
fill in a form,
get a stamp on your ARC and
renew your re-entry permit in your passport.
30k for extension
50k for a new multi re-entry
30 minutes of your time.
You will need:
your new contract,
your ARC,
your passport,
the employers guarantee paper,
a filled in application form and
30k-80k won. |

I don't know everything... just a few things....
I spent too many years working as an advocate for foreigners who got screwed and had to deal with the different government departments here (like labor, immigration, NHIC, pension, etc).
Add to that a few years of 1st hand "been there - had to do that" practical knowledge and bingo - information to spare and share. |

Well....30 minutes seems a little low...ok, a LOT low!! I guess it depends on the office and how many others come on the day/at the time you come, but the average wait in the Daejon office is usually at LEAST 1 hour and more like 2. I've heard that they've changed their office around and things are a bit better. I'll know for sure tomorrow. |

Don't they have the reservation system in your local immigration office yet?
In and out in 15 minutes. CHECK. |

If we are renewing our contract for another year, do we need a new visa issuance number for immigration? |

NO.
If you are renewing your contract you simply need an extension of your current visa/period of sojourn. See above post for extension information or check the immigration website: http://www.immigration.go.kr .
You only need a visa confirmation number and visa run if you are changing jobs/employers. |

Just got back from immi in Daejon and no, they don't have reservations, BUT the wait today was only about 15-20 minutes. Their offices are new and expanded...as is the parking lot. There is an immi officer at the desk when you come in to be sure that you have the correct documents and stamps and will answer your questions. Maybe we got lucky, but it sure does seem more streamlined this year!! |

Extensions and re-entry permits are done while-you-wait. I just did mine last week as well. |

Same day. They just stamp your passport, write on the back of your card and you're on your way.
One thing I did notice though, is that my multiple entry visa expires 5 days before the visa does. If you're someone who goes on vacation until the last minute before the semester starts in March, it's something to be aware of!! |

Hey Tom.
I don't know if that has any impact on me but it says in my contract that it should "not be considered a renewal" or something to that affect.
I think that EPIK busan wants to pay out severance on a yearly basis so they "officially" terminate our employment and then hire us back.
That is what I UNDERSTAND.
Do you think this would change anything? |

That is a common immigration practice. They figure that if you arrive back in Korea the day before your stay is up, you probably won't leave on time. It's not a problem though because when you renew next year, if you get a new re-entry stamp before you go on vacation (in January) it will take effect immediately and will cover you during that time. |
