It's the new LG XCanvas 42" 1080p model (Full HD) with a built-in "Time Machine" digital HD VCR. It's sort of like Tivo, if you have digital cable. You can also replay the past few minutes of anything you've been watching, in case you miss something. I think I have 160 gigs of space. Maybe there is a setting to change this, but currently, I get something like 30 to 60 hours of space to record on, depending if I'm recording HD or Standard TV, and it looks as good as when I originally saw it.
Go to any LG Electronics store, and look for the "Full HD" LCD flat panels. Mine is the current 42" version. There is only one (available in either wall-mount or on a stand).
It runs at 1920x1080 resolution, and is full progressive. My laptop will do this, but with a basic onboard Intel graphics chip, it doesn't do it very well. Good enough for surfing and playing movies, but that's it.
Some notes about Full HD:
It's the way to go if you want to your TV to double as a monitor. At 42", however, the 1920x1080 isn't stellar. Much of this is likely due to my crappy graphics chip, however (I output via VGA). The technology for higher isn't readily available yet, however. If you want to make a huge computer monitor, my advice is to wait for a higher resolution if you want a TV larger than 37". At 37", 1920x1080 is more then adequate. Above that, hmmm... it's good, but won't blast your doors off. If I sit back a meter or more, it's fine. If you wanted to sit up close with a chair, it's not finely detailed enough.
If you just plan on watching movies, then I'd say avoid 1080p all together, and just go with a good deal on a 1080i TV on anything 42" or below. You'll save between 500,000 and 1,000,000 won. I really don't think 1080p is a necessity on anything 42" or below. And from what i've seen of bluray and HDDVD movies, the film image is not something sharp enough to warrant bothering with 1080p anyway (unless you've got a massive TV above 46").
They had a 50" LG 1080i model for 200,000 more that was nearly identical to mine, but looked just huge. Damn, it was big. I'm not sure if it had the digital "time machine VCR" though. It wasn't Full HD, but as I said, I find it's not needed unless you plan on using it as a computer monitor or are an audiophile/videophile nut with a lot of cash.
1080i doesn't work well for a full monitor situation, though. You most certainly notice a difference between the two when viewing computer or photo images. As for regular rented DVDs or TV -- no difference. Bluray or HDDVD, it depends totally on whether or not you have a player that can output 1080p, and if the disk playing even has it. Then you might notice a bit of a difference, but mostly up close. Most people probably wouldn't care because the images look so stunning at 1080i. In the future, 1080p will shine a lot more, though. The content just isn't all there yet, and HDTV signals are still just 1080i anyway.
I will say that KBS and MBC in HD will make your jaw drop, when they are playing in 1080i. At first, I didn't like my TV because I thought the black levels were poor. I now have learned more about correct set-up, and I am thrilled that I chose this LCD over a DLP (despite higher cost for the Full HD). |
