|
I'm in Paris at the moment with my wife and we went the vacation apartment route and now can't see staying at a hotel anymore.
Anyway, in the apartment that have Freebox, which is all over France with the new Alicebox and a slew of others popping up. Basically the rate is about 30 Euros a month for digital cable TV, internet and phone, but the kicker is that calls within Paris are free, as are calls to about 30 countries.
I would love to have something like this in Korea, but who knows if it will ever get here.

You can't be doing it all the time, no matter how romantic the city is. |

In all fairness, that's a fairly silly thing to say. |

| I love Paris. I spent some time living there. I was homeless, living in a park at Place Denfert-Rochereau for about a month, then I was lucky enough to be invited to live at Shakespeare and Company bookshop (In the owners apartment.) He's 91 years old, sharp as a tack and can cook some killer Sunday pancakes. www.shakespeareandcompany.com |

I know the place well as I lived at the bookstore for 6 months back in the mid 90s when I was down and out in Paris; George took me in, helped me out and gave me deposit money for a little studio around the corner on Rue de Petit Ponte. After about a 2 years in Paris I got accepted to graduate school.
Now that I'm back I took my wife to the bookstore and George invited us to dinner and a week in the writers room. We accepted his offer for dinner, but did not stay at the bookstore.
There is a film about the store on the net if anyone wants an idea about the store and its owner George Whitman. The title is Portrait of a Bookstore as an Old Man |

I slept in that "bed" under the bookshelf by the dining table in George's apartment. My girlfriend slept in the adjacent bed.
George actually offered us his bed, but we politely declined. For about two months me and the girl basically just helped George keep his apartment organized. It was like the Ritz after sleeping in the park under pilfered cardboard.
Glad you could see George! Great guy, especially when he screams at me because I wasn't writing enough. Or he'd look at me for a long, uncomfortable moment after reading one of my stories and simply say, "That story is crap, get it out of my house!" So I'd write another one, luckily I never got that reaction again. I must have improved.
Ahh the good ol' days (last year..) |
