|

Hello,
If your job is paying into the health insurance but you haven't received a booklet are you still covered? Like if I got hit by a scooter tomorrow and went to the hospital without a book, would it matter, or am I screwed? I'm pretty confident that my school is paying into it, but they keep having 'problems' with getting us our booklets.
I don't want to hear about the fact that the school might be screwing me, I know what to do in that case and I'm working on it. I'm just wondering about the above mentioned situation.
thanks |

Not true, in my experience.
Some places may make you pay upfront, for which you can be reimbursed later, and others will look you up on the database though your number and charge you the insured prices, and some may just say no. Your coverage 'should' begin as soon as you are signed up. Either way, push to get the booklet ASAP to avoid any hassle. |

| Thanks for the replies. My boss just told me that the booklet isn't necessary and that I am covered simply with my visa and alien card. Now I know something is fishy because that's obviously not true. Sigh... |

| You don't need our booklet if you have your ARC card. All the doctor or hospital has to do is run your ARC number. I have done this many times. The question is whether or not your employer has actually enrolled you. |

I might not have been clear. You do NOT need to have your booklet, and your coverage begins when you are signed up, regardless of when you get your booklet. You are covered through your ARC, but I wouldn't count on all doctors' offices knowing that. |

No, no, you were clear. My concern now is that I'm not signed up at all. I was told, or at least I understood as much, that I automatically get health insurance with my E2 visa/alien card. But I know my employer needs to sign me up and pay into it for me to have the benefit. I'm still pretty sure I'm covered, but I just don't know why everything has to be so cryptic and difficult here. How would these people feel if they, or their children, came to our home countries and were screwed over.
Ok, yeah, I know they are. |

OK, in that case (if you're worried) I'd recommend contacting them directly. But just for reference sake it took my first job a month or so to get the booklet, even though I was signed up from the beginning. |
