Is there a place that I can search on my laptop that will tell me what regional code(s) my DVD drive will play?
I know it plays region 1 (US) since it's an American product. I'd like to check before I buy/rent DVDs here and then find that I can't use them since I don't have a DVD player yet for the TV. |

| Generally, when you put in a DVD from another region, it will let you switch regions up to 5 times. If you have never switched regions, and you don't plan on switching back and forth a lot, you can do this once while you're here, and then just flip back when you move home. Software hacks can be found on the web, usually. |

| Download the VLC Player. If you use that you shouldn't have any problems with any region. |

If your player is playing the DVD automatically, don't change anything. If you think you HAVE to change it to the region for Korea, it's region 3. If you feel that you must do this manually, follow these instructions:
-Start
-Control Panel
-Performance and Maintenace
-System
-Hardware
-Device Manager
-Click on "DVD/CD Roms"
-Double click on the DVD drive
-Select "DVD Region"
-Choose the region and hit "apply"
I think that gsxr750r was trying to tell you that you'll likely be promted to make a change if a change is necessary by windows media player if you happen to use that program. As others have said, you may want to choose another player to avoid having to make those changes. |

Thanks that's what I needed. I haven't bought any DVDs yet becasue I wasn't sure if the comp would be able to play them. I have a pre-installed DVD player (Intervideo WinDVD 4) it's probably not the greatest player but the comp is about 3 years old. I guess I will get a DVD and see what the comp does with it. I am having my movies sent to me from the states, if I have to switch the code that would cancel my ability to watch my movies from home right? I don't want that to happen. If the comp does want me to change it for the player I have is there a good download player that will allow both region 1 (US) and region 3 (ROK) to play without switching? |

Thank you for a direct link. I didn't know what the VLC player was. I wasn't sure if I put VLC player into a search engine I would get the result for the thing you were talking about. I am downloading it now. |

| VLC doesn't necessarily make every DVD player region-free. If you've got an RPC2 drive, you're pretty much hooped unless you want to use your 4-5 free switches. |

The OP should ignore all other posts and just download VLC (VideoLan Player). |

I don't know what this means. I know next to nothing about technology. When I get a chance, I'll download VLC. Will that allow me to play Korean DVDs on my American laptop? Also, will I be able to play VCDs on it? (Not sure if VCDs typically work on DVD players). Thanks. |
