This morning I caught two -two!- mosquitoes in my apartment. Winter isn't even finished yet and the little buggers are already here!

I'll believe that when I see (feel) it. I think they've had similar reports the last two or three years. They're bound to get it right sooner or later.

Dude...they never actually went away. I've had mosquitos in two seperate apartments ALL semester. It's the combo of a super warm winter, shallow sewers, and copious bars and resteraunts constantly tossing out water.

I wrote about it happening in February 2003 and 2004 but that was on relatively mild Geoje Island off of the southeast coast.

It'd be something if you're quite a bit north of that. Where on the peninsula are ya?

Yep...I've dealt with them all winter and I'm pretty far North (Incheon). Even in the fridgid tempatures those little sucker survive.

Just name them and consider them pets ... Training them might be difficult, but you could try taking them outside for a walk (or a "fly"...) so that they can bite a dog or cat to get their minimum daily requirement of blood. Then they can return to your apartment with you and perch peacefully on the wall without having to bother you - unless they need a late-night drink to help them sleep ... Laughing

It's crazy, right? I think high latitude mosquitoes really need more than a cold snap to go away, otherwise they just wait it out in warm spots, of which Korea has plenty (warm floors=warm pipes). Did you notice a month or so back, when it snowed those little suckers were nowhere to be found...then the next day the temp was warm again and here they are.

Yeah, in Korea I was praying for a harsh winter, instead I get it in Chicago.

Last week, I had a dragonfly in my apartment. Freaked me out. I heard this noise. Thought it was air escaping from a bottle of cider. Thought nothing of it and then heard it again. Tracked it down and saw the critter buzzing in the ceiling light in the kitchen. Don't know where it is now.

I haven't seen any mosquitos but I have had ladybirds (live) on my balcony since last fall when there was a massive swarm.

Down south in the US they call 'em "skeeter hawks"...

Keep it around. If you can cope with the idea of that thing crawling around you while you're sleeping, it can be a useful houseguest, considering their diet mainly consists of mosquitos.
