Scientists expose HIV weak spot

Antibody (green) locks onto a key site on the virus
Scientists have shown what happens when an infection-fighting antibody attacks a gap in HIV's formidable defences.
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases-led team say the work could aid HIV vaccine development.

They have published an atomic-level image in Nature showing the antibody, b12, attacking part of a protein on surface of the virus.

HIV avoids attack by constantly mutating, but this protein segment is a weak spot because it remains stable.

This is certainly one of the best leads to come along in recent years

Dr Gary Nabel,
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

Dr Elias Zerhouni, director of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), said: "Creating an HIV vaccine is one of the great scientific challenges of our time.

At 25 years old, my entire life has been learning about condoms and HIV, I dream of the day I can engage in some good old fashion, 1970's gay condomless sex. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Even with the potential threat of HIV you can have condomless sex if you

1) trust the person and
2) are both monogamus (sp?) and
3) have been tested for everything known to man on more than one occassion and come out clean (at least 6 months apart) and
4) don't do any other "high risk" behavior

or the other easy way out is to both be virgins and #4 Smile

I mean hell me and my ex wouldn't worry about it or "forget" occassionally but we followed 1-4. The only thing we worried about was pregnancy but that was covered as well since he had a vasectomy (but those do naturally reverse on occasion....my best friend is living proof).

If you aren't going to do 1-4 then condoms all the way. But that's just my 2 cents worth, and the PSA/Soapbox is over Laughing

Good PSA, not stated enough especially for all those guys out there not using a rubber!

I trust my boyfriend and my lover (yes, I keep 2, just in case, lol) but monogomy is not my nor my 2 guys strongsuits.

There is a great doc called Gay Sex in the 70's

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455953/

and I would have love for us to be able to go back there, but that cannot happen until HIV is cured.

Until then, the rubber vigil continues!

One of my female friends in the states was like that: one steady boyfriend who occasionally has another girlfriend, her occasional boyfriend (or boyfriends) some who have other girlfriends or boyfriends, and occasionally a girlfriend or two that may or may not have other boyfriends/girlfriends. Everytime she told me about her plans and the relationships I kept having Sex Ed flash through my head "choose your partners wisely since you will effectively be sleeping with everyone they've had sex with and the people those people have had sex with and so on". I kept feeling like I should keep her supplied in condoms just so she'd stay healthy. To my knowledge she's never caught anything and no pregnancy scares so she's been real lucky. I am much happier and less worried when she gets into a stable monogamous or almost monogamous relationship. Everything else kinda scares me for her, I don't want to lose a friend Smile.

I will admit that I have moments of worry and dread. In fact the routine (i.e. every 4-5 month) HIV and STD tests are truly terrifying, but life is like that. I live next to the world's most heavily defended border, I drive a motorcycle, I like bungee jump, snowboarding, I speed when driving, etc etc etc. I figure that if I am going to get it, it will be from one of those things.

I am also lucky to have grown up in a house with progressive parents who taught me and gave me condoms from my 13th B-day until I moved out at 18. We need to teach people that condoms are always mandatory until your 4 good points are met in a relationship.

Yeah my best friend and I went to the Leather faire in SF this year, it was fun. I got more samples of different brands of condoms to last me a couple of years if I don't turn into a total sex maniac Laughing It was the biggest message test here or test there, try this brand of condom, lube or otherwise, check out this video company. Like I said was interesting, but I got my supplies restocked for free. I brought them with me since on one of the several threads on this board, it was mentioned that most Korean condoms don't fit right for foreigners, I figured if he doesn't have them then I do and the bases are covered (no pun intended Smile ).

I wish my house had been progressive like that. I don't think my mother ever told me much along the lines of sex ed except make sure you do what you need to do so you don't have any consequences. And if you end up having some conequences then you will have to deal with them. That was it. The rest was left up to the school system (which where we lived was pretty decent in this respect).

BTW: I think we hijacked the thread Embarassed

Do you have sex?

Can you actually fit between the legs of an average girl without crushing her?

Wow! That diet must be paying off!

My favorite story, after most of JongnoGuru's stories, is about a guy who was dating this Korean woman. Things progressed. He figured the next date they'd be doing it. So he wanted to be prepared and he got some condoms. They're at his place, clothes are coming off, she mentions that they will have to be careful not to make her pregnant. He says no problem, I got some condoms. Suddenly her mood changes. She seems offended and hurt. Like he's just called her a *beep*. Her bra goes back on and she leaves. He's like WTF?

Best I can figure, the message he was trying to send, that any western woman would have picked up on, was "I respect you, I will deny myself some pleasure to make sure you're safe."

The message a Korean woman might take "Was I such a shameless hussy that it was obvious to you that I was going to give it up? So you got condoms because you knew I'd be spreading my legs tonight? Is that what you think of me!"

Yeah, so clearly she was thinking withdrawal.

I worked at a hogwon in Seoul one year (a terrible, terrible year) and one night we are all having drinks after work. Of course some of the guys are dating some of the korean co-teachers and we are all talking smack when one of the Korean girls (25 years old mind you) pipes up about how she "knows" that she can only get pregnant 2-3 days a month, all the other days she is safe. The look on her boyfriends face was the funniest thing I have ever seen. After that he got her on the pill asap.

Oh, that'll be the day! My partner and I have condomless sex, but if we have a 3some or moresome, we always use condoms. Some guys have been turned off by our insistence, though. Condom usage doesn't seem to be very popular here.

Peace
