So Tuesday we begin a week of prep classes (Our school opens on the 5th) And I'm beginning to get a little nervous about what to do.
I am currently the only english teacher here (another arrives on Tuesday) and I need to have something for my prep kids on Tuesday.
I've read alot of advice on just going with the flow and "winging it" but I'd like to aleast have some sort of plan in place. My director wants me to come up with a curriculum but I still am kinda lost on how to get it done. (this is my first rodeo per se)
I know I can teach these kids, but I just don't have any idea where to start. The book we're using is ChildU (which I think sucks- and I don't even know much) and it breaks children down into begginner starter and intermediate levels. Which is great except I don't want to just spoon feed the kids books.
I'm hopeful that once the other teacher gets here and once I get into a flow I won't have any difficulty using the tips here to get lesson plans in place. But what should I do to get started? |

How long are the lessons, how many students will you have, what ages are they, and do you know anything about their level? |

lessons will be 2 hours total for each group.
Which will be broken down into 4- 30 minute blocks Phonics, Lang Arts, Vocabulary & speech
Students ages are from 6-10
Levelwise, yes. I gave them all their student evals over the course of this week It will go from beginner (this is the letter A) all the way to "When I grow up I want to be a Dr. because my father is a doctor and I like to help people"
Students will be broken down into the 3 seperate groups as stated before.
How bad is this...there are 2 or 3 that I almost wanted to turn to mom and say "Listen lady, whomever you've been paying to teach your kids you need to keep doing it" there are some I've wanted to tell they've been getting scammed too tho. |

Worksheets are a new teachers best friend.
You can copy pages from the book, cut and past the pictures and words; white some words out, mix things up for matching and numerous other activities. This requires very little work and keeps kids busy!!!
For alphabet worksheets there are lots of sites with free worksheets, just google it. Coloring and tracing are good for super low level.
If you have reading books, reading comprehension is always good and takes up time. You can make this as easy or as difficult as you need.
Hope this helps.

30 minutes is a very, very long time to teach kids that young one particular activity, especially if you have four activities that long in a row. Have a game prepared for each component. I have some rough ideas but it's been so long since I've taught kids that age (and it's not my forte, especially compared to secondary) that you'd probably be better off getting advice elsewhere. For each of the four parts I'd strongly recommend that you shop around for some supplementary material. www.puzzlemaker.discovery.com will also provide you with a quick crossword and word-search you can use as two 15-minute fillers to supplement your lessons. |

thanx for the help guys, but FYI every time I ask if we have some sort of prep or material I get this answer "We will buy"
You know, like crayons and scissors and paper.
Luckily it looks like the kids will all have their own books, but I'm kinda wondering if I should bring in a stack of crayons from the house otherwise they'll be air tracing.
oh and games will be kinda hard cuz we have a total of 10 kids for prep this week all spread out over 2 hour blocks and some will even be by themselves. |

1) Make Worksheets ( from books, internet, or handmade )
2) Flashcards ( real ones, internet, or handmade )
This should get you started.........google is your best friend. |
