I'm kind of tired taching kids, am looking for another job and ran across their ad on Dave's. For the most part, they describe it as adults and college students. Can't find anything on blacklists on them.

http://www.eslcafe.com/jobs/korea/index.cgi?read=21970

Can anyone who has experience with them give me some input?

Hugo: do a search there is a lot of info about EC. And calm down, EC teachers DO wear lab coats - White for Korean teachers and baby blue for Native speakers.

According to my source, the managers are hard asses. They are quit demanding and take advantage of your ignorance of contracts and conditions. Know the policies from the head office. They push for long hours.

Pay is good due to overtime. It's one-on-one the vast majority of the time.

EC foreign teachers wear the blue lab coat, and the the Korean teachers wear the white ones. You can work Saturdays about 150 from what I understand, and that is what your ad says. Are you in Canada or the U.S. now? Will you have to pay for your airfare when you go back? What is the shift like at the school? What are your working hours? I don't know. It may differ from branch to branch. I would look at any job's contract details, the manager, the ability to negotiate things you don't like, and if you don't feel satisied do what you think is best for you. The advantages there, from what I can see, are the overtime, the lack of preparation needed for their classes, and teaching adults, if that is what you are looking for. Read the contract and ask as many questions as possible, and write down what you want a contract to contain and check to see if they have what you want. There are plenty of schools that teach adults from what I hear. I don't know what they all offer. I don't have a lot of experience in that area. Maybe you should have asked the fellows if they could recommend a certain school that they worked at or are working at.

What is all this overtime talk??? There is no overtime at EC, unless you are covering for someone on their unpaid holiday. In this case you are paid at 15,000 per hour.

The pay scheme is complicated but overall, you will be paid between 11,364 and 13,000 per hour depending on your booking rate and how many Saturdays you work. Saturdays increase your overall pay rate as they have the highest hourly rate at 150,000 for an 8 hour shift (18,750/hr).

Basic pay is 11,364 per hour. Slight increase if you are busier than average.

The average pay would look something like this: 2,000,000 (Base) + 300,000 (2 saturdays) + 100,000 (70% booking rate bonus) = 2,400,000

This would be for working 24 days @ 8 hours per day = 192 hours

So your pay rate would be 12,500/hour.

*** to be fair, let's assume 1 red day holiday per month so your hours are 184. Then your hourly pay would equal 13,044 per hour.

English Channel's Samsung Clinic is HELL!! Do not work there!! The staff are miserable and unhappy. So many employees have resigned and left in pursuit of happiness. They do not honor the rules and regulations in the company handbook which, by the way, is on the internet, and, most importantly, which they have encrypted, so that it is impossible to print or "cut and paste," and they can change that online employee handbook at anytime. Sneaky tactic indeed! Further, you will be kept on the split shift LONGER than the 6 months or 3 months that they say you will be kept on. You will be kept on the split shift for LONGER than 6 months. Guaranteed! Also, the owner/manager is a witch. She is evil! She will fire you on the spot, for any dumb unfair reason, and that will be your last day. No notice. None what-so-ever. Even though the contract says you must be given 45 days notice. Further, there is at least one case where an employee was cheated out of money by Samsung Clinic. An employee had finished his/her contract, then went back to his/her home country, and then Samsung Clinic did not pay her all the money that they owner her. At that point she was thousands of miles away. They had agreed to pay that employee his/her last paycheck at a time when he/she would be long gone and back in his/her home country. And when he/she got paid, he/she was missing a few hundred dollars! He/she e-mailed them but they did not reply. They stole money from him/her! I used to work there. It was hell! Given the info that I have just provided, under no circumstances, regardless of how hard Robert Webster or anyone at the corporate office may try to persuade you, should you ever accept a position at Samsung Clinic. This is good advice from a person who used to work there. There are also other posts criticizing Samsung Clinic on Dave's ESL Cafe. DO NOT WORK AT ENGLISH CHANNEL'S SAMSUNG CLINIC. IT IS HELL!! Avoid English Clinic's Samsung location like the PLAGUE!!!

PostPosted: Fri Feb 16, 2007 1:21 am    Post subject: Additional Information about Samsung Clinic! Reply with quote

To learn more about the evils of English Channel's Samsung Clinic go to:
http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=57787&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=english+channel+learn&start=15 and then scroll down and look at the post by "lilla_fjaril."

Lilla_fjaril tells how: (1) they stole money from him/her after he/she had returned back to his/her home country by not paying him/her all that they owned him/her; (2) they often shortened him/her on pay checks; (3) some teachers were NEVER paid for training or given raises when it was owned to them; and other evils of Samsung Clinic.

Lilla_fjaril provides much feedback about his/her experience at Samsung Clinic.

I don't know anything about the Samsung Clinic, but I can say I've had a good experience at the one I am at. So they aren't all the same. So far, I've been satisfied at my branch. It will be all right for me, an all right place for me to finish out a year.
