I know this topic has been posted numerous times, but I am curious about the 2007-2008 contracts with GEPIK. There are some clauses in there I don't agree with, such as 900,000 won deposit. Also, they changed the number of my holidays from 24 to 14. Not sure if this was a typo.
From my understanding GEPIK employees are forced to sit at the school during breaks. Has anyone ever received more than two weeks vacation?
I like to travel. So vacation time is important to me.
On a plus note, 3 good things caught attention in the GEPIK contract.
1. Only 40 hours can be used for camps for the entire year.
2. Overtime can be used towards extra time off ( hopefully you get to select the days)
3. You are NOT required to work at multiple schools.
BTW who is re-signing with GEPEK for 2007? Note I mean RE-SIGNING(staying) not RESIGNING (leaving) from GEPIK. |

Still undecided on the re-signing question. If either the university gig in Tokyo or the IB job back home work out, then probably not.
I think if you are planning on sticking around for more than a year the real question is this: are a person's options better after a year with GEPIK or are they better after a year at a hogwan.
I have a gut feeling on this one, but I haven't been in that position yet. There are people around here who have, and I hope they'll offer some input.

Hmmmm, nice! What's the clause # for this and was there a similar clause in the 2006 contract?

Yes, 4 hrs OT now = 1 day vac.
I didn't know that the 2006 contract gave 24 days vacation. I only got 14 but my schools cool as I don't have to sit at school during breaks. |

I am in the middle of my second contract with my school. During my first year I was in a non-GEPIK "program" where I got about 9 weeks vacation even though my contract said 14 days. I signed a very similar contract for my second year, but around Christmas my minder came back from a co-teachers conference and said that I can only get 14 days paid vacation.
So I am pissed. Our school got put under GEPIK which is cracking down on letting their native teachers have vacation. So I have to sit and "study" in school next week.
I am concerned about the summer because I want to go home for a month just like last summer. I'm getting a new job in the fall and I will not stay in school after classes are finished to prepare for a semester I am not going to teach...
ANyway, I want out of GEPIK just because it is run so badly. I'm going to look for a private middle or high school and just apply directly to them, or maybe work for the Seoul government. |

YOu may want to check a post that I made earlier regarding this problem. It seems like the contract that GEPIK put out a few weeks ago talked about the 1 hour of OT = 2 hours of paid leave. I spoke with Wenise Kim a few days ago and she confirmed that the NEW contract which came out on Tuesday goes back to the old rate of 1 hour of OT = 1 hour of paid leave. It seems like there are 2 versions of the contract out right now, even on the GMOE site |

That's retarded! Why make two versions of their contract? What happens to teachers who signed on with GEPIK previous version of their contract.
If they keep pulling crap like this, how are they going to find teachers?
In my opinion two contracts is a bunch of B.S.!! |

Can you honestly say this is the first time you have felt this way since arriving in Korea?
Incidentally I agree with butlerian. A year at a public school is a lot more valuable on your cv than hogwan time. GEPIK's a Korean program run by a Korean bureaucracy - anyone with an ounce wit can see the potential for problems a mile away. But I suggest taking the risk sometime if you want to beef up your resume for a sweet uni job. |

Really bites and just goes to show that you should read the contract carefully and compare w/ others here and only agree to sign if it has all the favorable clauses in it.

Article 12 sub 2 of the current GEPIK contract reads:
2.During school winter and summer break, Employee may be asked to participate in special classes or English camps, up to 20 hours per week. Such special classes will not occupy more than 40 hours during the winter or summer breaks. |

I've asked Wenise to clarify the different contracts in writing, though I doubt I'll hear anything this weekend.
The biggest differences b/w the contracts put out in December and on 2/14 are regarding the 40 total hours of camps during the vacation period, and with the overtime being saved up as vacation leave.
The contract put out this week only states 20 hours/week of camps, but no total limit.
Also, 1 extra hour of lessons only counts as 1 hour of paid leave, whereas the contract put out in December counts as 2 hours of paid leave.
Wenise explained over the phone that schools can change things, but I want to get something in writing to show to the school. |
