Don't know if anyone has posted about this before, but there's a video out made by the Korean govt. about the Dokdo dispute. Regardless of who you choose to believe, it's a funny piece of modern-day propaganda.

What's up with the bizarre audio processing of the voice over? You can hear strange phased doubling behind the natural sound of the voice ...
Oh, I believe Dokdo is Korean and should stay Korean ... |

Well that clearly states the Korean case. I'd be interested to see the Japanese side. The general concensus (amongst people that I've talked to anyway) seems to be that Japan presents a stronger argument than Korea.
The whole dispute seems really silly to me. People get so worked up over it, and really what is the value of a couple of rocks in the middle of the sea? I know that the argument is mainly symbolic for Koreans, but I mean c'mon. Do you really need to cut off your finger/stab yourself in the stomach/teach every kid in every school that Dokdo is the single most important place on the planet. Seriously, we have globes in the classroom at our school, and if I had a dollar for every time a student asked me "teacher where's Dokdo?", I'd have like 7 or 8 dollars for sure! |

The value of the rocks is more than symbolic. They are at the heart of some rich fisheries and may contain hydrocarbon deposits. Shimanae prefecture laid claim to the rocks by announcing Takeshima day as a sign of support for local fishermen who have in part suffered from the re-drawing of a fisheries treaty in 1996. Its partially an issue of globalization (the local becoming international), but there is another side too.
The residual nationalism felt in Japan since their humiliation at the end of the war manifests itself in various ways. One example is the visits to war shrines. Another is ambit claims like this. Like Korean displays of nationalistic rage, they are mainly for domestic consumption. Japan is unlikely to aggressively pursue its claim and will save it for a bigger fight. However, if pushed too far, especially by a Chinese navy with an emergent blue-water (read ocean-going) potential, Japan could very well seek to assert itself around the strategic bottleneck of the Sea of Japan.
I hope that answers your question, JT, and don't thank me for it since I am accustomed to schooling you daily on everything from tying your laces to dating tips |

No opinion on Dokdo here, other than I hope it doesn't cause some fool war.
As to the phasing, likely a result of a low-rez sampling rate over a higher-rez source. CD music would have the same problem, but the higher frequencies of CD music is choped off.
I liked how the guy would pronounce "Dokdo," reminded me of a Will Ferrel SnL sketch where he keeps saying "Jaguar" with three sylablles with a funny, brtish pronunciation. |

| I think it's high time Korea and Japan duked this out in the Octagon. Winner takes all (Dokdo/Takeshima, East Sea of Japan, etc) |

Out of curiosity, why as an argument, dont I ever hear Dok-do being simply considered the spoils (or rather reparations) of a failed aggressive war? Germany certainly gave up a huge chunk of its pre-war territory as a result of its escapades. I mean, fisheries or not, Dok-do is certainly less valuable than eastern Prussia, and you dont see the Bundestag (sp?) making claims on Danzig or Koenigsberg.
Trying to argue on the basis of ancestral claims or whatever seems a bit futile considering the more modern history. |
