I bought a Compaq Presario 915us notebook way back in '03, for around $900. I figured I'd be lucky to get a year or two out of it, at most. Nevertheless, here I am, 4 years later to the day, abusing the same machine.
I've given it an enema (about two years ago dust clogged up the works), I've reformatted it once or twice, and I've kept it safe with all the usual virus/firewall/spybot programs.
Specs? An AMD Athlon 1800+ processor, 240Mb RAM, 1.52GHz, 40GB.
It won't play the latest games, but it doesn't get bogged down when I'm running multiple programs, either.
My buddy bought a $3000 Dell notebook a couple of years back that's been nothing but headaches all along.
In short, Compaq did something right with this notebook.

| My Compaq laptop is also excellent. I bought it six months ago and I've had no serious problems. Compaq is just a product line of Hewlett Packard. |

Sounds a lot like the Toshiba I bought the same year. I got it on sale at Circuit City for $650. I think I'd probably still have it if it hadn't caught some wicked virus 1.5 years later that rendered it unusable.
I waited until that summer in 2004 to get back to the states, hit the Best Buy and got myself a widescreen Sony VAIO. This thing is great. The graphics driver is a bit out of date, but the specs are still pretty acceptably up-to-date 3 years later. I'm definitely getting another VAIO when I replace this one. |

I've got a 5 year old Fujitsu 17inch 1.1GHz 40Gig 512Mb RAM laptop which would probably still be serving me instead of hte machine I'm typing on if it wasn't for the 4Mb (FOUR???????) graphics card it came with. |

I'm looking for a first time user laptop but worried about the upgrade possibilities. Mostly I'm worried about the graphics cards. They tend to turn to poo sooner than other parts. Sometimes completely mucking up. How about upgrading, what's it entail? |

Well my crummy graphics card can't be upgraded. i tried in Japan and got blank stares and suggestions about buying a new laptop. Haven't tried in Korea though it has to be said. Probably can be done but I wouldn't bother now as I'd really need to give the whole machine a shakeup - including RAM.
You're best off making sure that all the specs are what you want before you sink all your money on a laptop. Don't consider upgrades as they'll be expensive, difficult and, because they may require proprietary parts, possibly impossible after a couple of years. |

As for specs on the one I want, less than one million, but not really a brand, TG something.
C2Duo
1gb ram
120gb HDD
17"
XP
128mb graphics This is the only thing that sucks. Why not 256?
However, it would suit my purpose at present.
The guy (at emart) said to upgrade need to install a new motherboard as graphics are built in to that.
I don't see why it would be so hard. Dead easy on a pc. What's the hard part about laptops? No screws on the back cover? |

Hi TG Sambo is not famous but it's not crap either
Here's a link:

I think they are like LG was a few years ago...used to be cheap and crap and then decided to make quality products, but still need to shake off the old image |

My favorite part of the whole TG Sambo thing, other than the fact that they've chosen an interesting name of dubious origin, is that part in the wiki where they state "[we] compete directly with IBM and HP".
Can anyone name even one computer maker that doesn't "compete directly" with IBM and HP?
Did I miss something, or IBMs and HPs NOT being sold in every country on the planet? |

They dropped the 'Sambo'...I like to think that they did after the African-American players of their basketball team told them they wouldn't resign unless they did (I bet they must have gotten teased by their friends and family back home). |
