Logic can only work with information that is known (and/or accepted) and that's its major weakness. |

A valid logical statement based on the limited empirical data you have. |

See my point, it's logical to him but illogical for most. It all depends on how each individual's thinking process works.
There isn't just one logical way to catch a bird. The logic can be viewed as the effeciency of thought process.
How to make 5?
1+1+1+1+1=5
2+2+1=5
3+2=5
5=5 |

luvnpeas,
You are misunderstanding the thread topic. Logic exists outside of context. It requires not for any info to be correct, which is perfectly illustrated by my example.
Let's try again.
1. Bush lied about Iraq. 3000+ American soldiers have died. Bush's lies have killed 3000+ American soldiers.
2. Insurgents and Al Queda in Iraq use weapons against US soldiers. 3,000 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq. Insurgents' and Al Queda's weapons have killed 3,000+ US soldiers.
Both are completely logical. Which you adhere to depends on your premise.
A third may clarify further:
3. Soldiers go to fight in Iraq. Soldiers know soldiers have died in Iraq. Therefore, soldiers who go to Iraq want to die.
Completely logical, and almost certainly true of no soldier in Iraq. |

That's not a real premise, even an inductive one. |

Neither of those are logical, if by "logical" you mean the conclusion follows from the preceding statements. |

Is that supposed to be an a priori or a posteriori truth claim? |

All of you people pretty please go get a formal logic book.

Which is not in any way contradictory to what's been said. |

No, logic should not be taught as a core course at universities.
Not because the ability to apply logic isn't essential, but because courses in logic involve learning how to prove the axioms that A=A, and that A /= not_A.
While that may be interesting, for most of us it is enough to say that A=A and not not_A is self-evident. |

Privateer,
Logic is usually applied in much more complex ways than that. So please. Shut the hell up.
And I can't give all of you a course in logic in a message board post.
If I could, I would stop saying you people need to study logic and explain logic to you.
Start here. It's the best course in deductive logic that's ever been written:
http://www.amazon.com/Euclids-Elements-Euclid/dp/1888009195
It will take you at least a year to go through it casually. |

And you can't prove a = a. That's something we call an "axiom."
You *could* construct a geometry where a != a, theoretically.
Further proving my point. |

Are you a real premise? You're being an arrogant ass. How's that for a premise? And you're doing so stupidly. The above-quoted material was not presented as a premise. Now, pull your head out of your arrogant ass. |
