Police in central India found 390 body parts from fetuses and newborn babies thought to be unwanted girls buried in the backyard of a Christian missionary hospital.
Both announcements threw a spotlight on female infanticide and feticide in India, where an estimated ten million baby girls have been killed by their parents in the past twenty years. |

Fundamental difference between Indian and Chinese contexts: In China it's the GOVERNMENT commiting the evils, on a top-down, enforced through coercion and contrary to local values.
No comparison.
The police in India recognize it as a problem and report it as such. The police in China are part of the problem and receive orders to do such.
Pity the Indian poor.
Curse the Chinese government. |

It doesn't take any technology. Infant girls were (and still are) simply left to starve to death in the Indian village where I worked. Too expensive to raise them and marry them off. |

Wont this emphasis on males later on create a serious demographic problem? IE: Too many males and not enough females? |

It's already a problem. The village where I worked is next to a river. All the villages along the river import wives from villages downriver from them. You can imagine the problems in the last village at the end of the river. |

Well, if people in India don't make enough of an outcry to put a stop to this then they shouldn't be so upset when Babu can't find a wife, because a baby who could have grown to be his wife was killed. I think it is sad that people would take a life of a baby, because the baby is a female. I don't have kids, but I think you are lucky to have a nice child whether it is a male or female, and some people can't even have one kid. I think what will happen is disproportionately people from the background of those people who commit infanticide won't have wives for their children. It will hurt the poor of India more than the wealthy, and you will have desperate males probably engaging in homosexual behaviour because of the shortage. |
