US wrestles with execution question
By Iain Watson
BBC News, Washington
US death penalty opponents are vocal - but perhaps not a majority
On a pitch black winter's night at the Lady of Mercy church in the small town of Potomac, Maryland, about 50 people have braved sub-freezing temperatures to hear a chilling tale of an early death.
Vicki Schieber has come to talk about her daughter, Shannon.
Shannon was a student in nearby Pennsylvania.
She was raped and murdered at her hall of residence and the killer was caught only after he moved to a different state and committed another rape.
A transfixed audience listens to her mother's hushed yet longing tones: "What do you do when this happens to you? The death of a family member is a tragedy of unimaginable proportions."

[Some think the death penalty can be a deterrent. I think it might, but I am not sure about applying the punishment.] |

When something bad happens to me, I know I feel completely satisfied when someone else dies. |

I am actually against capital punishment, but I don't think you are in a position to speak on this issue. You talk like a high school kid. I can understand why some people would feel a need for revenge.
I could be very wrong, and if so I apologize for my supposition, but I doubt you're (insert member of your direct family here) was ever a victim of (insert heinous, sick act here). |

If you want to read a good book, try John Grisham's The Chamber. Although it is fiction, it makes some good points aginst the death penalty.
It's about a guy who was in the KKK and blew up a Jewish lawyer's office and was sentenced to the death penalty.
Before I read the book, I've never really had a strong opinon either way about the death penalty. Now, I'm leaning against it. |

The title of the article is misleading. Each state has its own laws concerning the death penalty. Many states don't allow it and haven't for decades. These are: Alaska, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin. |

Well, Iran just executed the defendant in their local bombings last week.
If Iran can do it, it must be OK.
I mean, they should be allowed to have nukes, right? Just because the US has them? So it must be OK for the US to execute people. |

You're funny. So anyone can do anything to you, or your family, and you would never want to have that sucker dead?
I mostly disagree with governmental killing from an economic standpoint. Its cheaper to lock them up forever under our (U.S.) system. And it should only be applied in cases of irrefutable (DNA) evidence.
You can save your high-school ethics crap. You haven't lived long enough, or seen enough, to have any position on this matter. You have made this very clear on this and other threads.
Apparently your 'tutors' were for crap. |

Then again, what do you know about any of our 'tutors'? |

I am making the observation that they are 'perhaps' deficient in their tutoring skills because that other guy hasn't learned much during his stay.
Is that clear enough? |
