anyone done meaningful volunteer work in SE Asia? and not the kind where you have to pay to volunteer...

There are some opportunities to do volunteer teaching in some North and North-Eastern rural locations. You get a small stipend, accomodations, etc. Sorry I don't have any links but a google search should turn up something.

If you want to teach English you can easy get a spot in Phnom Phen, but if you want they will also pay you Smile

Try Habitat for Humanity in India; I think their main office is in Delhi.

You can just walk in off the street. The Cambodian teacher, in my very limited experience, has not very good English, will be glad to give their students time listening to a native speaker, and will also be glad for the break.
