I'm going to Kyoto via Fukuoka in a couple of days. I already have accomodation booked, but what are some good places to see or good restaurants to go to? We are trying to do it on the cheap, so now high end Kobe beef for us.

Try to pick up a sandwich or two from the many convenience stores for lunch or try Yoshinoya or Matsuya, both fast food Japanese style, for dinner and lunch. Never take a taxi. Try buying a rail pass. Use the Fukuoka downtown shuttle bus for 100 yen. Patronize outdoor food stalls.

Use the pedestrian subway between Hakata & Gion. If you're feeling lazy you can catch the subway train. There are 2 good temples at the Gion exit. The first, Tochoji, is on the main street as you exit Gion. It has the largest wooden Buddha in Japan. The second (Sofukuji Temple off Taihak U Dori Avenue) is one street block back. Some shots I took last August:

Canal City may interest too

I'd stop off in Hiroshima & Miyajima too if you have the time & money. You can get a 1 week JR Pass at Busan Port. It cannot be purchased in Japan. In Kyoto, I stayed at the Three Sisters Guesthouse near Heianjinju Temple, for about 5.5k yen. Recommended.

In Kyoto, Fushimi-Inari Taisha (endless pathways of red wooden torii) is definitely worth a visit, and I think it may be free. Wandering through the east area between some of the temples - i think the Lonely Planet calls it the Philosopher's walk- is also a nice no-cost activity. Not to mention, getting lost meandering through the back alleys. Have fun- we visited last August and loved it.
