Have a look at the housing offer in this job ad.
"While we do not provide paid accommodations, one�s salary is ample enough to cover monthly rent/utilities and we will help you find suitable housing that fits within your budget."
How do they know what individual budgets are?

Compensation:
1) Salary: From 2.0-2.4 million won/month (based on experience and qualifications) with the opportunity for overtime to increase earnings up to 3.2 million won per month.
2) Severance pay (equivalent to one month's salary paid upon contract completion).
3) Roundtrip air ticket.
4) Incentive bonus, paid out every 2 months.
5) Medical insurance (50% employee/50% employer).
6) 10 million won key money deposit.
7) Motel accommodation (up to one week), prior to securing an apartment.
 10% off all YBM related products, and 50% discount on Korean, Chinese and Japanese language classes.
9) 8-10 days of YBM holidays plus all National holidays throughout the year.
Once again, the YBM ELS branches in Daegu and Daejeon need enthusiastic people who are serious about teaching. Experienced teachers are preferred but we are also willing to open our doors to those who are not so experienced. You must possess a University degree, have sealed University transcripts and be from a country that has English as it�s first language - the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, South Africa, Australia or New Zealand. At this time, Daejeon ELS is particularly interested in hiring prospective teachers to commence part-time work in March 2007, but all branches are always on the lookout for those who may wish to work later in the year, particularly in the summer time.
YBM ELS has been around since 1961 and it goes without saying that it provides a very reliable and stable work environment. Yes, you would usually need to work a split shift (i.e. mornings and evenings), but that is because we cater mainly to adults so we must teach them at a time they can study. Nevertheless, it is certainly possible to receive a block schedule during the busiest months of the year, in January, February, July and August. While we do not provide paid accommodations, one�s salary is ample enough to cover monthly rent/utilities and we will help you find suitable housing that fits within your budget. Fortunately, in Daegu and Daejeon the rent is much cheaper than in bigger cities such as Seoul or Busan � typically, it ranges from 200-300,000 won per month. Aside from that, both cities do not suffer from many of the problems (e.g. heavy pollution, traffic, etc) that are associated with those large metropolises and yet they serve as a convenient nexus for travel to other hot spots in Korea. Moving on, vacations are spread throughout the year so you have, on average, a three-day weekend almost every month. If you sign up for a second year (and we do encourage 2nd year contracts) then the benefits increase as well. Pay is on a monthly basis and you could get as much as 2.4mil KRW per month depending on your experience and qualifications. Now, on to what we need from you - enthusiasm. This means liveliness, energy, and passion. Experience and a TEFL/TESOL certificate do count, but if you have lost the passion to teach, then any qualifications are meaningless. I do not mean over-the-top dancing and prancing in class, but rather showing your students that you care about their learning by portraying it both in the classroom and through your class preparation. While I need teachers who care about teaching and their students, I also need teachers who can adapt and work as team players. You will not be the only foreign teacher in the school so getting help and helping out your workmates is also encouraged.

| 10 million key money for daegu isnt so bad. you can find a nice place with that (if you are single that is). rent should be around 300,000 a month with that so your monthly salary will be about 2.1 which is about standard for YBS isn't it? (correct me if i'm wrong). doesn't look too bad. Of course, its probably not going to be YOU choosing which apartment, its probably the school, so they will more than likely just put you in whatever **** hole they can find for cheap. |

I had a job offer from that school but couldn't take it. They told me they took you out with a real estate agent to look at available apartments and you had the freedom to choose where you wanted to live. It's what I heard from the other teachers and they put you up in a fleabag motel (most likely) while you are looking for places to live. Otherwise they don't care about the cost since they aren't the ones covering it.
They know your budget because they pay your salary. If you'd rather pay more to live in a posh apartment, that's up to you. Most schools don't pay for utilities anyway. They told me an apartment (villa style) downtown would be around 300,000 a month on average. It's not as sketchy a deal as it sounds. |

| I'd have to agree. If they pay you 2.4 and your rent is 300 000 I don't see the problem. 2.1 mill for teaching adults isn't so bad. |

I guess it just depends on how much experience you have and what salary you'd expect to be making.
FYI They've been looking for teachers for awhile, you could probably negotiate a higher salary than what they'd normally give you. |

It's not bad if you don't work split shifts.
Why anyone would work split shifts for 2.4 and pay their own rent is beyond me. |

That's the reality of teaching an an adult hogwon.
Take it or leave it. I took it, then left it.
The ad seems pretty straightforward and honest to me. |

A few years ago that was the only option.
Have your house provided by the kiddies hagwon or teach adults for effectively less and I think the adult schools were well aware of this.ie that teaching adults was WORTH the pay cut.
These days,public schools provide a third option,which Unigwons would seem to be on a par with.(I don't consider the average Uni student to be much different than HS students anyway)
Those high paying,long holiday Uni jobs are pretty thin on the ground. |

u guys better read the post agian.
it says 2.0-2.4 and for YBM that means 2.0
so now the salary is 1.7 which is way too low.
I see YBM has hit a new low |

| Yeah, it's only 2.1 AT BEST, 1.7 at worst. if you are qualified enough or persuasive enough to get the best then you can do better than this school for sure. |
