I have some trouble believing that this place would actually pay 5 million a month for someone with outstanding credentials. If it really would, it's gotta be in the extreme minority. The way this guy was talking, he wouldn't even believe me that I don't make 5 mil. It was almost making him angry. |
Yeah, for those types of jobs, that pay in levels, to make the top amount you damned near have to have published articles in ESL and have a PH.d (almost).
BUT, last semester I was making 4mill with just one extra hagwon job. If I had the energy for one more... |

So when looking to do a 2nd year in Korea, what kind of money should I expect? Should I use job boards to post my resume? I want the more lucrative positions but I'm not sure how they will find me. |

just post your resume on daves, worknplay, englishspectrum, etc..
I was offered a position for 2.5 about a month, with almost 2 years of experience, and that was just over the phone, without actually meeting anyone. I'm sure I could've gotten more had I gone to the interview.
A lot of the better paying jobs are found through networking and luck. |

I came over here with a job earning 2.0m plus a free apt. My second job was 2.2m plus apt. But for my third job, I looked around a bit more and found a TOEFL position (that was will to hire an oegugin like me) with a base salary of 3.4 m for about 20 hours of class (and "clerical work") per week. Add the five 100K per hour privates I teach per week, and my salary comes out to over 5.0 mil per month...so, such jobs are out there, but not always easy to obtain. |

If you're already on a contract and your school doesn't offer overtime. Then how do you get more work if you have your mornings and early afternoons completely free? |

You need to get both the school's and Immigration's approval.
Good luck. |

Maybe he's figuring in the cost of the apartment. It still wouldn't come out to W5 million, but housing is expensive and should be considered when figuring our salaries. And throw in free plane tickets. |
According to my students, my "villa" apartment is 300,000won per month. That's dirt cheap. Maybe people who live in Seoul pay more, but in Cheong-ju housing is cheap.
But the op's point is - why do taxi cab drivers worry or even care about what hagwon teachers are being paid? And why was he angry when the teacher told him the facts? Xenophobia, pure and simple. There's no justication for this. |

1) I don't doubt that there is some good money to be made for those willing and able to do private lessons. ESL salaries have to be taken with a grain of salt, as I understand that many teachers can obtain the base salaries with only 20-30 hours of work a week; this would mean a salary of 3-4 million Won/month if working a standard workweek of 40 hours.
2) Comparisons with Korean university professors are absurd. These professors have advanced degrees (usually PhDs from top universities) which are not required of ESLers; also, competition for Korean professorships is extremely intense; there are probably 5-6 applicants for every position.
3) I have met a few guys in Itaewon who claim they make 10 million KRW a month. This seems rather high, especially since the guy I heard it from seems to be drinking nearly every night. He is also single. Is this possible? |

Of course this is really irrelevent as it doesn't matter what the average Korean thinks of us. I mean who really cares if they think we are rich playboys that are here illegally with zero qualifications and are all child molesters. Am I wrong? |
no point caring what the ignorant think about you. |

This is what I find most impressive.
It's quite possible during intensive season, but doing it consistently every month is hard even for people with top jobs or high-pay tutoring gigs.
If you have an addtional stream of income (business, book sales, TV appearances, online class commissions, etc) it becomes much more feasible, but from one dude simply teaching, it's quite the feat. |

This is true, but when you're talking about English proficiency, the level of the older male professors is disgraceful. I teach in an English department, and am friends with the English lit. prof. He's a nice, smart guy.
However, I've had 3rd grade kids in hagwons who speak better English. Restricted to English, I can barely communicate with him. I've never heard him put together a complete sentence.
As a foreign language teacher (I taught French at UCSB), this just isn't acceptable to me. I know it's different and Korean is more difficult, but if you're an English professor you should man up and spend the time abroad or whatever to at least attain a base level of English ability.
It's like a math prof. who can't do basic multiplication. I know it's generational, as the younger head of the dept. speaks excellent English.
But the fact that the older profs don't take the time to improve their English (it's never too late) indicates a profound, irresponsable intellectual laziness. Probably they think they can simply teach in Korean, but the irony is in our dept. the theory of the day is CLT, which is opposed to teaching in the native language (they even teach CLT in Korean, which is sort of a double irony). |

There is something going around Korean circles cause yesterday my mother in law said she heard that schools were paying more these days and teachers got 5mil a month. My wife and I told her that was BS and most teachers got 2.2-2.5 plus housing at the public schools.
I hate it when the rumor mill starts circulating these lies. |

I just got back from riding in a cab wherein the taxi driver was asking me if I'm a student. I told him I'm a teacher at a hagwon, and he asked me how much I make. I was like, well, that's a personal question, so I would only say that I make enough. He smiled and said that he thinks 5 million a month is enough, too.
At that point, I had to tell him how much I really make, and I pointed out that the average foreign teacher salary here is around 2 - 2.5 million, sometimes less. This dude flipped out. He went off on a tangent, and at one point completely stopped the car in the middle of the road to turn around and demand that he was right.
He was almost shouting at me and talking at hyperspeed, so I couldn't make out the details enough to piece together what he was telling me. He did say something about privates, but I told him I don't do those. He said even without privates, foreigners can make as much as 5 mil a month working at a hagwon. I was just like.. man, I wish!
So I'm really curious where this rumor comes from. I get the impression from his reaction that he was given this information by someone whose word he trusts authoritatively.
Anyone else heard about this?
Q. |
5 Million!? Man I make 10 million a month teach only 2 classes a week and have a free BMW! Oh and did I mention that I left a six figure job to come here and teach?
Seriously, in most places in the world including my hometown people always inflate the salary figures. No one in my hometown is going to admit that they are making $35,000 because at that moment the gal who was having a drink with them will be roaming around looking for another more lucrative prospect. When I hear what someone claims someone else is making I usually subtract about $10,000 a year from it and guess that as the more accurate figure. |

My best friend regularly pulls in between 4.5-5.5 million won a month. He works part time at several different hagwon's (the employer who sponsors his visa doesn't mind). He also teaches privates. Granted, he speaks near fluent Korean. I often get close to 4 million myself once I include privates. I know that is higher than normal. I had a taxi driver act strange about thinking I made 5 million a month once. Very few people make that much. |
