|
|
Here's a link to an article in today's NYTimes on Korean men going to Vietnam to get brides through brokers there. It explains a lot about the social conditions behind this phenomenon, but there's still a creepy feeling to it.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/22/world/asia/22brides.html?hp
The intro:
Quote: |
It was midnight here in Hanoi, or already 2 a.m. back in Seoul, South Korea. But after a five-hour flight on a recent Sunday, Kim Wan-su was driven straight from the airport to the Lucky Star karaoke bar here, where 23 young Vietnamese women seeking Korean husbands sat waiting in two dimly lighted rooms.
Do I have to look at them and decide now? Mr. Kim asked, as the marriage brokers gave a brief description of each of the women sitting around a U-shaped sofa.
Thus, Mr. Kim, a 39-year-old auto parts worker from a suburb of Seoul, began the mildly chaotic, two-hour process of choosing a spouse. In a day or two, if his five-day marriage tour went according to plan, he would be wed and enjoying his honeymoon at the famed Perfume Pagoda on the Huong Tich Mountain southwest of here. |

I always find it somewhat frustrating that the fact that 25% of marriages in korea involve a foreign spouse is in large part NOT due to our innate charm as white monkeys. |

I read the article and this quote caught my eye...
Quote: |
To be honest, I dont know much about Korea except what Ive seen on television, Ms. Vien said. But the Korean landscape is beautiful. Korean men look sophisticated and affectionate. They seem responsible, and they live in harmony with their family members and their colleagues. |
I find the way it is done to be quite fascinating. I mean, at least in the situation used in the article, noone seems to be lying to each other. But what a way to start a marriage. I would love if they did a follow up to that story in 6 months. What trials and tribulations must await them..... |

which still fascinates me....I'm sitting here watching some stupid show on tv called "How to Get The Guy" (I'm bored and desperate for something in ENglish) and it's interesting that American men can't find a woman but there are shows devoted to getting a man....
I'm too young to get this maybe Or the wrong gender |

"The women have come out looking their best for you. But don't expect them to look as pretty as Korean women. There is a big gap in our GDP's. Don't be condescending. Don't lie. If you lie, they'll find out eventually and feel betrayed and run away."
"The parents know that their daughters will marry a Korean man. The authorities know this is happening, but there'll be trouble if we do it in front of them. So I seek your understanding. Once we land in Hanoi, even though it'll be very late, we'll go meet the women right away. It's safer to do this at night."
"One last thing. Other companies allow you to sleep with the women on the first night. We don't. Only on the bridal night. We must, after all, keep our decorum as Korean men. Is that O.K. with you?" |
Disgusting. |

Those of you who have a problem with this, why? For the women, after having spent a month in the hellhole that is India, its seems like a pretty good deal. Be a farmer in Vietnam, destined for utter poverty, or come to Korea and maybe have a chance at a better life.
Plus, Korean society can only benefit. If they accept the foriegn brides then the "Korean" identity will change and perhaps this place will become more open. If they reject it then they will have to acknowledge the value of girl babies.
As long as the women aren't being abused (and yes, I know that is happening in some cases) or the government tries to help them I think this is a good thing. |

I read the same article on IHT.com(International Herald Tribune) today.
I found it very interesting that the girl's entire families came to see them off. I think if it was not considered a step up for the girls, the families would not be supporting them. Everyone wants a better life for their children. The reality of ths situation may be that Korea is a better life. It is possible the Korean husband will abuse them physically, but that could happen in Vietnam, India or even the USA. |

Usually women are not so quick to defend a 51 year old man coming to marry a woman a year older than his oldest child and himself being a year younger than his new father-in-law. |

I was more surprised with the fact of 14% (1/7) of marriages in 2005 involved a foreign partner... that seems quite significant.
I wonder if gyopos count as foreign in this case or are we still considered "Korean" no matter how long we've lived outside of Korea. |
