Your love-hate relationship with the Hankookin might just turn into a purely hate-hate one should you one day and be a caucasian male or a negroid male or female.

Despite the risk of this thread turning into a 10 page flame war, I'm kind of a bit weirded out that anyone would seem to think being a white girl in Korea means that we get life easiest of the waygookins here. I'm not trying to discard anyone else's negative experiences, but I do think that for all the complaining that goes on the board about negative aspects of the culture on Korean women, that white woman might experience their own share of the Korean partiarchy here as well.

Yep, definitely weird. From my point of view, white men have it WAY easier than women here. Especially if you're a tall, thin, well groomed, unoffensive looking white man. Life is a breeze.

I used to work with another Canadian girl who had to leave after one month, which I considered a justified departure. She couldn't even smoke in public because people would glare at her. A guy would never go through that here. Life for her sucked in Korea.

My female co-worker was a slim, pretty blonde from NZ. Everyday she had to walk past a large construction site on her way to work. We didn't realize that EVERYDAY the men at the site were trying to grab her to talk to her, calling her Russian, leering at her. She was at the breaking point because of this and never told anyone because she felt nothing could be done.
The McDonald's woman treated her poorly, was rude and slammed her food on the counter when she ordered. The convenience store owner in the bottom of her building was nice, but if his wife was working instead, she THREW her products towards her after ringing them up.
In our school 2 male teachers smoked(one of whom was my Husband). She would occassionally go out into the stairwell with them to smoke. After a month, the Boss had a meeting with her. She was informed she could no longer smoke in school hours. 7 hours a day without a smoke, being harassed as you walked to school, this combined to make her life a living hell!
She never dressed suggestively, in fact, she usually dressed head to toe in black with no skin displayed. She never smoked in public, and yet she was constantly harassed. One man one drunken night threw money at her and tried to drag her into a building!!
It was NEVER easy for her here!!

I understood that to mean that if you had been another variety of human, you may not have gotten that gift from the coworker. Not that I agree, but that's what I understood to be the writer's intent.

you bet!!!!

Nothing like walking down the street with a friend and have some drunk korean man slap your butt and ask you how much. Same has happened when I was alone, sweaty, walking in the summer on a nature path sans ass slap.

Yeah and having my friends boobs grabbed in full daylight by some guy with his wife had she (my friend) not pulled back he would have gotten a free feel of white boobies.

I don't smoke but you have to hide or you are a pariah. One excellent, qualified teacher in the city I work was fired because she was not pretty enough, a bit older, bad teeth, smoked and wouldn't wear make up.

Yeah it's a freaking box of fluffy ducks for us gals. Not to mention the men from the west frequently call us fat, ugly, feminazis....gosh I wish I would have come sooner.

Yeah, some women even get taken to task by men for daring to smile in public, much less smoke! I think white women have a tough row to ho in Korea.

Smoking is poison and you're killing others along with yourself. You, oh smoker, deserve the glares.

On the other hand, if someone grabs your boobs or ass (Or your wang for that matter if you're a guy) a smack upside the head is a justified response.

I don't smoke makes me ill in fact. But men walk down the street smoking and scratching their nether regions and should I light up I think I might be stoned in public or at least drawn and quartered.

They touch me I start screaming at them and they run like rabbits. I am mean I have 4 brothers so not much scares me.

One more reason I don't go out in public without my husband, unless I really have to and he is not home. I avoid crowded places and going out at night. If some guy would touch me, he wouldn't do it again.

At the risk of going against the grain here, I think life is WAY easier as a white woman here. It may sound horrible, but if I need something done in Korea, all I need to do is put on my helpless white girl face and people are tripping over themselves to help me out.

I know for a fact that fat foreign women here have a way tougher time than fat foreign men.
