Hello all. I am new to the board. Actually, I have been a casual reader for 2 years and now I've finally decided to join in on all the discussions. I myself am also in the Korean esl industry.
Anyways, I just wanted to comment on a general trend I've noticed in the foreign community for the past couple of years. Many foreigners, especially on this board, identify themselves as being very wordly, hardcore travellers, who know about so many things in so many places. But of course they use Korea as a safety net to comment on the outside world. Basically, foreigners here generally spend 1 month of the teaching year in Thailand and the Phillipines, take a few pictures, and send them back home. Show everyone how they're 'roughing it' overseas, going to exotic destinations. Yet for all their worldliness and travels they are not actually willing to live in these countries because they 'can't save any money.' Of course, the money they make there would be more than enough, but it's not enough to send home to match their countries dollar values, which of course are countries most people on this board are not willing to go to again.
Basically, from the bosom of one of the safest countries on the world they sit in their university or school offices and make comments about places like iraq and afghanistan, of the disintegrating west and the future of korea. How they are in the place to be because they are 50 pounds overweight but still get a different girl from itaewon or hongdae every night. Yet for all they complain about the west, korean people move to the west and end up making more money and living in nicer houses than the foreigners here do.
For the foreign girls. You're not necessarily an ugly lot. I think it's the way you carry yourselves. Western women often come accross as too manish because they often have a chip on their shoulder, and carry about in an undignified manner. Basically, they don't act feminine, and carry themselves with little class, which is very unattractive to western men. Hence, why western men prefer Korean women. Basically, I say to the western women that you are no longer living in the Canadian praries, so take a cue from Asian women who know how to carry themselves with dignity. They've had 1000's of years of practice.
For the men, nothing much else except the freaky white guy thing looking for Asian women really does look funny from an outside perspective. You should film yourselves at the clubs.
And Kyopos, listen. You're parents didn't move to the US or Canada just for you to come back here and teach English. It looks rather funny as well when you're parents are living and working in the US or Canada for your benefit and you're hanging out in Seoul, acting too cool in Apgujeong and fighting with the white dudes over whether or not you also have the right to a free apartment and 2.1 million a month. Don't forget you are foreigners as well, so don't act like a good Korean boy or girl in front of your boss, and then act like the cool foreigner in front of other whiteys. Even my Korean co-workers complained about the Kyopos that came and went from our school because the Kyopos served more as servants to the boss, and acted as a spy among the faculty. Got some of my co-workers in trouble. The Koreans banded together and made sure the boss didn't get any more Kyopos. Understand? You guys ruin the Korean experience for yourselves.
I digress, a mixed bag of weirdness here but always good for a laugh. |

Welcome to my nightmare
I think you're gonna like it,
I think you're gonna feel
Like you belong,
A nocturnal vacation,
Unnecessary sedation,
You want to feel at home
Cause you belong,
Welcome to my nightmare.
Welcome to my breakdown.
I hope I didn't scare you.
That's just the way we are
When we come down.
We sweat, laugh and scream here,
Cuz life is just a dream here.
You know inside you
Feel right at home, here
Welcome to my breakdown.
Whoa, You're welcome to my nightmare,
Yeah, I think you're gonna like it,
I think you're gonna feel
That you belong,
]We sweat, laugh and scream here,
Cuz life is just a dream here.
You know inside you feel
Right at home here,
Welcome to my nightmare.
Welcome to my breakdown. Yeah |

Good call. Of course, I might just be saying that because I lack a thousand years of dignity-practise. My bad. Man, it just makes me want to stomp my feet, wriggle my shoulders and whimper "Ooh-PPAAAAAAAH!" There. That feels much better. You've come a long way, baby.

The same ones who live in Seoul, take the KTX to Busan once, maybe fly to Jeju or make one or two other trips to a place outside the Seoul/Gyonggi/Incheon metro area and think they know what there is and ISN'T to be seen and experienced in Korea!

You sound like you chase Asian skirts yourself. Yet you go on to mock those who do.

One doesn't have to be a psychologist to see very clearly that you are depressed and have very low self esteem dude. Are you ok? There is help available if you need it. |

If you click on any of the many recent threads on suicide and depression, you'll see that, no, help really is not all that "available" to those that need it here in Korea. The prevailing attitudes about suicide, the lack of awareness about depression, the stigma attached to people on drugs to treat their depression... Telling someone "help is available" isn't giving them practical advice, Satori -- it's almost disinformation. |

The OP sounds awfully like someone who lives in the same building as a friend of mine. He's told my friend similar things and the guy has ZERO friends and stays inside his apartment when he's not working...never goes out unless absolutely necessary. Hey OP, is your name...naw, never mind. |

but am i wrong in my observations? by the way, I figured as much the lot of you would try to make comments on me rather than my post. Perhaps because you have nothing constructive to say? If you did you'd teach people who can actually speak English. Otherwise, stick to the how are you's in the kindy classrooms, and the uni's for that matter. |

What you are doing is using your small sample selection and generalize it to the entire foreign community.
You might be surprised that there are other foreigners that do not come here to teach english, first.
Second, some teachers actually come here to teach, not just to chase skirts.
Thridly, from my own experience, eventhough education of english might not be on par, it does help those who really want to learn english.
I suggest you try to meet foreigners outside of the ESl commuity, there are some interesting folk to be met. |
