do u think that religion really plays a significant role in enabling suicide bombers to blow themselves and others to pieces? should we blame religion in general, religion plus politics, or just politics hijacking religion? maybe these guys, who are mostly in their twenties, just can't get the vision of 72 virgins waiting for him out of their minds. do u folks think atheists would make good suicide bombers?
(i know its boring but im bored)

US 'misread motivation' of suicide bombers
Reporter: Kerry O'Brien
KERRY O'BRIEN: Not everyone accepts the stereotype of suicide bombers recruited by the Al Qaeda network, as religiously-inspired haters of Western values, intent of destroying Western civilisation. One American analyst has conducted a comprehensive study of every act of suicide terrorism over the past 25 years to understand what drives suicide bombers and why suicide terrorism is on the rise around the world. He says it's too simplistic to assume Islamic fundamentalism in[sic] the central cause. |
It's from 2005, but still relevant. You can read it here.
peace,

Obviously religious conviction gives them the strength to go through with it, but there is definitely a more serious component. They are terrified of the influence and control western culture holds over them. There are many westerners who likewise feel threatened by Muslim culture, but it's not as threatening to us right now.
Remember that atheists have religious conviction too. I think if you forced an atheist and a Christian to become Muslim, they'd both try to resist. |

This is more current events paper for the fire place type of work.
Religion is relative. So the person who said define religion had a point. Religion is interpreted in some parts of the U.S. South to be extremely materialistic i.e. focusing too much on the love of money. Judaism with the emergence of Zionism and discrediting of the Socialist movements kind of downplayed waiting for the Messiah and some ignored it.
Muslims are not supposed to even destroy trees or kill any civilians of any religion or children, but it is done in markets in Israel and Baghdad.
People often do what is convenient. As far as the 72 virgins, that is more media hear-say. There are virgins mentioned, but there is actually no actual figure for Muslims in their religion in terms of number, and they don't need to die in a battle to get that, so that is more propaganda and kind of is a smoke screen in the battle waged for public opinion over ideologies. |

i hear they're running out of virgins up there. Hopefully they'll run out of bombers soon. my feeling is that suicide bombers are motivated by both..."religio-politics," practically inseperable in that part of the world. government and religion are basically the same thing in most muslim countries. politics are the reason, religion is the enabler. any doubts in the bomber's mind about dying are put to rest by reassurances of paradise afterward. societal praise is another reward. imagining your name on a list of revered matyrs, or the knowledge that your face will be on posters celebrating your matyrdom is a motivator, too, especially if you live in hopeless circumstances.
