Dear Friends,

Where do I get Gauloises, or other decent cigarettes, in Korea?

Lord Jesus, it's been nearly six years now that I've been here in SK, six years of relying on the duty-free shops to supply good cigs on the rare occasion I've been able to venture off to Thailand or wherever.

Surely, though, there's got to be a tobacco shop of some decency and goodness right here in Seoul. Surely? Help? Someone?

Dunhill Lights are OK, but still . . .

TD

I like clove cigarettes. The only place I've found them is a little store in Incheon. I stumbled across it exploring my neighborhood. Only 2 blocks away from the apartment! 2500 a pack and just terrible health wise, 38 mg tar and 1.88 mg nicotine! I love em!

There's a cigar shop in the Hamilton Hotel mall in Itaewon. Go through the front entrance, off the main drag, and it's up the stairs one level, on the right.

I didn't notice any of those throat scraping Gaulouises, but there's a wide range of cigars and cigarettes from around the world. At the very least the owner can help point you in the right direction.

I'm looking for "Djarims"

They are Indonesian clove cigs. Surely they must be around here somewhere?

Okay, just so for the record, don't smoke and think it's probably one of the worst things you can do to your body, but the title of the post caught my attention because it reminded me of my chainsmoking Belgian professor and his Gauloises (you should have seen that guy when he tried to quit smoking. He'd eat peppermint candy like it was going out of style and he'd stand in the door, taking deep breaths, whenever he noticed that someone was smoking outside the classroom.

You could order from here if you smoke regularly.

Check with customs on the exact amount of duty (I found that it's 65% for filtered cigarettes, but they have the tendency to add other surchages to get around from WTO rulings).

Djarums can be head in either ansan (ansan station, get out and look at the indonesian grocery stores), or for a severe premium (7000/pack) at Bali restaraunt in Itaewon.

Thanks very much for that info. Off to Ansan soon... and to the OP, hope you can find what you are looking for!

edit: visited Ansan and Djarums cost a mere 2,500 per pack. Amazing!! Very Happy
