So many movies, so many genre. (So many movies missed because of the goddam Korean screen quota.)
I liked Casino Royale and Rocky Balboa.
The Descent was scary as hell and enjoyable. |

I liked most of the nominees for best picture.
Babel- best drama
Little miss sunshine-best indie/comedy
dreamgirls- best performance (jennifer hudson upstaged beyonce??? wow)
The queen-interesting because you never really know whats happening in the queen's head
Jesus Camp- best documentary (and scariest)
I second the decent for being super scary...had nightmares for a week!
Also watched pursuit of happyness this weekend-will smith puts in a pretty good performance.
Departed was most disappointing film of the year. |

Besides the first "jump at you" moment, the rest of it was hogwash.
These creatures live underground with no sense of sight, and yet go above ground to feed? That makes no sense at all, as well as the fact that they had NO sense of touch at all.
Cool premise, but totally fell flat about 50% of the way in.
For me, Apocalypto was one of the better films of 2006, as well as Children of Men, Borat, and The Departed. |

| I watch "the departed' the other nite. Good flick, but maybe not the best of the year. I can't honestly say I watched a movie this year that I finished with a "wow, that was amazing". Pretty sad. |

I must have watched about 100 movies in 2006 and these are the ones I would go to the movies to see
Blood Diamond
Babel
Apocalypto
Dave Chappelle's Block Party
Casino Royale
There were too many movies in 2006 that were watchable but not really worth paying to see. |

| Haven't seen and WILL see eventually: Sean Penn's All the King's Men, Disney's Eight Below, ATL, Ice Age: The Meltdown, Jeff Bridges' Stick It, The Prestige, Two Weeks, Apocalypto, Blood Diamond, Letters from Iwo Jima, Soderbergh's Bubble, Sam Shepard's Don't Come Knocking, The Last King of Scotland, Loverboy, Manderlay, Edward Norton's The Painted Veil, Gabriel Byrne's Wa-Wa |
Well,... it's been several months since I made that list, and many I've managed to see.
Saw Eight Below on hotel cable t.v. the other night and enjoyed it, liking films about animals. Stick It I bought and really enjoyed it, was better than I expected, edgy funny directing, at least the first half of the film. Blood Diamond was Leonardo's better acting that year yet got nominated for Departed (*shrug*). Penn was brilliant in All the King's Men, The Prestige was a big yawner, predictable and slow with little payoff, dis-ap-pointing! ATL was just okay. Letters from Iwo Jima was better than Flags for our Fathers in terms of character development but the central idea of the Flag flick was awesome: The importance of the symbol over the thing, who was in the picture of the flag raising obsessing the masses and the military, its significance blown out of proportion to the accomplishment, great twists and turns on that idea. The Last King of Scotland was everything I hoped it to be, Forest Whitaker's best actor performance. Bought but still have yet to see The Painted Veil and just picked up the DVD of the African film I knew I'd get some day, Tsotsi.
HAS ANYBODY SEEN THESE IN KOREA (on pirated DVDs perhaps): Soderbergh's Bubble, Sam Shepard's Don't Come Knocking,
Gabriel Byrne's Wa-Wa
I suspect those three will fall through the cracks and I'll have to wait until I go back home.
All in all, most films are pretty accessible here, at one time or another, here or there. |

Great film, but take my advice and have something funny and a little cute to watch afterwards. It's sort of a rough ride. |
