Do you leave your helmet on your bike when you're out doing whatever, or do you carry it with you? It's nice riding the bike to different places, but it's a pain carrying the helmet around everywhere I go. Just wondering if I should worry about theft.

If you spend 10 bucks on your helmet (head) then I guess it doesn't really matter if u leave it on the bike or not.

If you spend a bit more on your head (life), i.e a few hundred bucks, you'd be best to carry it around, or find a place that will hold it for you. (dept stores, shopping malls, shops etc are usually pretty cool with that).

I never leave my helmet on my bike.

Um, I wouldn't leave 250,000 won lying on top of my bike - why should I do the same with my helmet worth about the same? Seems silly.

kingofdisco nailed this one. +1 to what he said.

Also, I've seen certain backpacks with straps that cen be rigged to hang your helmet off of - so it's a little easier to carry if you're, say, going to climb a distant mountain. If you're far out in the country, a helmet lock will probably do.

Or you could just, I don't know, leave a venemous snake in there.

) but anyway I have a helmet, so I'll chime in. If I'm parking near a subway entrance or big store, I'll put the helmet in a locker while I run around on foot. The only time I leave my helmet on the bike is when I'm sticking around close by.

But, let me mention that twice I have left my keys actually in the ignition for hours at a time and the scooter hasn't been stolen yet. Maybe I'm just lucky?

I don't want to sound like a safety freak or anything but as as a sport bike rider back home I learned that you should never leave your helmet on your bike. Here's why...

Helmets are built to absorb the first impact that they receive. The energy is absorbed by the helmet and the foam inside the helmet cracks after an impact. It cracks as part of the process of absorbing the energy. You may not know that there are cracks inside because the outer skin of the helmet is fine.

If you are riding and crash with a helmet that has never been dropped then it will work properly. If you crash while wearing a helmet that has been dropped previously then it will not absorb the energy correctly because of the tiny cracks in the inner structure and could end up transferring the energy to the person instead of absorbing all of it.

If you leave your helmet on your bike it will fall off eventually, thus reducing it's effectiveness. Back home we are tought to buy a new helmet if ours receives an impact. Needless to say, we carried the helmet with us inside and never left it out of sight or in a place were it could fall.

Helmets get swiped. If you don't like carrying it around, get one of those things you attach to the back of the bike, the cases. Back when I was riding, I just stuck it in that and it was fine.

my scooter has been swiped 3 times (unsuccessfully) from in front of my house. this isn't the downtown east side of vancouver where everything worth 1 dollar or more will get stolen and sold for crack... but still, people do steal here.

i'd err on the side of safety if you don't want to risk riding home helmetless and getting a fine or a busted melon.

I drove a motorbike for 5 years in Korea before deciding my 9 lives were up and bought a car. That and that fact that a motorbike as a family vehicle for a wife and two kids did not seem practical, no matter how many times you see it done by Koreans.

In regards to leaving your helmet with your bike, get a helmet lock. I lost 3 helmets before I clued in.

I have had two helmets swiped in 3 years, as well as some handle warmers. In every case, I just had them sitting on the bike. No more.

Many bikes have a hook under the seat where you can thread the helmet strap, or end of the strap through. Then you can lock the seat down, and it stays put. I have a scooter where I can fit the whole helmet (half-moon) under the seat. There is a small hook under the seat, as I mentioned where I can hook the strap of the 2nd helmet on and lock down the seat.

i live in a small town, so i leave my helmet on my bike, because half of the town knows whose bike it is anyways. when i travel out of town, i lock it up.

i heard the fine was 30,000 for no helmet...

you can buy used boxes to put on the back for as low as 40,000, that is what i got my first one at. the helmet fits in there.
