In the March GQ (Christian Bale on the cover) is a great article about a guy who was arrested in South Korea for trying to smuggle a kilo and spent the next four years in Korean prisons. Check it out if you get the chance, fascinating stuff.

4 years is that all? In the US, if the feds grabbed him, with the conspiracy laws he would more likely have received 10 years.............

I guess what I found interesting about the article wasn't the length of the sentence (I honestly have no idea what drug sentencing is based on in America, other than watching The Wire), but rather that this is a part of the expat experience in Korea that many of us are unfamiliar with, whereas most of the experience has been rehashed ad nauseam (see: Dave's ESL Cafe).

In other words, I identify with the protagonist and am interested in what happened to him because we shared many similar experiences. I thought others on the board might feel the same.

Someone who gets busted for drug smuggling?

I doubt I'd identify with that at all.

Yep smuggling drugs is not something I intend to experience in korea. I guess the only reason they made that book in Korea, is that if they'd made it in Taiwan on Singapore, it would have been a very, very short book ending with the guy on death row.

From the response (or lack thereof) to this thread I would be forced to conclude that most posters agree with you. I'll try to be more discerning in the future.

The excerpt was in American GQ and, I assume, will be published by a US company. Did you mean set in Korea? There are lots of good books about westerners having brutal experiences after being arrested for drug smuggling in Asia. Midnight Express jumps to mind. Also, as it is a factual account, I'm not sure anyone had much choice but to set it where it happened.

4 yrs for a kilo of what? American beef? Seems like a pretty lax sentence to me. If I ever decide to become a drug smuggler I'm making Korea my destination. Massive demand, crap sentences.

Upon further review, "hash" seems to be his flavor of choice, but, again, I am the least savvy drug person in the world. Sorry for not being more clear.
