According to a report disclosed by the National Police Agency yesterday, police arrested 2,724 foreign nationals in the first half of the year, up 15 percent over the same period last year. The report, submitted to the National Assembly's health and welfare committee, also showed the number of non-Korean crime suspects jumped by a disconcerting 20.6 percent to 5,221 last year from 4,328 in 2001.

The 2001 figure also marked a hefty expansion of 25.9 percent from 3,438 in 2000, the report revealed.

Assault was the offense most frequently committed by foreigners with 956 cases, or 35.1 percent of this year's half-year total, followed by 550 traffic violations (20.2 percent), 364 intellectual offenses (13.4 percent), 227 thefts (10.2 percent) and 16 murders.

By nationality, Chinese nationals topped the list, accounting for 42 percent of crimes by foreigners, followed by U.S. citizens at 17 percent, Russians at 5.1 percent, Pakistanis at 2.8 percent, Vietnamese at 2.4 percent and Japanese at 2.2 percent, the report said.

I always knew those shifty foreigners were behind all the crime in Korea...
What the hell is an intellectual offense?
Who are these crimes commited against? Other foreigners, Koreans or both? It seems like Koreans are more reluctant to call the cops then us waygooks.
Its kind of sad that they group parking tickets in the same 'waygook crime' category as murder.

What percentage of Koreans who assault foreigners get charged?
What percentage of foreigners who assault Koreans get charged?

That would be interesting to know if it were possible.

More Crimes Occur on Saturdays

According to a prosecution survey released yesterday, more crimes are committed on Saturday than on any other day of the week.
The "2002 Crime Analysis" published by the Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office said there were 181,357 crimes on Saturdays, or 15.1 percent of the total 1,197,820 last year.

Fridays came in second at 14.6 percent, followed closely by Thursdays (14.4 percent), Wednesdays (14.2 percent), and Tuesdays (14.1 percent).

Recent statistics for five major crimes -- murder, robbery, rape, burglary and assault -- show that even though the economic crisis is over, the crime rate is still high. The number of these horrible crimes was 330,000 in 1998 but increased to 470,000 last year.

This will include when the Korean hits first and one is acting in self defence. Koreans are never wrong when they scrap with a waeguk.

I know they listed these numbers in descending order... but surely the murders should probably have come at the head of the list?
Or is swiping someone's unattended fake Prada bag worse than bumping someone off? Confused Smile

I can tell you FIRST HAND from my ex-girlfriend's friend who is a cop.

He said that when Korean go out of their way to pick a fight with foreigners, the law sides with the Koreans.

That said, there has been a surge also in attacks against foreigners in Korea. So, of course the numbers look bad for foreigners, but in reality, if you REALLY look at it, it translates into more Koreans attacking foreigners and ultimately more charges for the non-Korean speaking foreigners.

Sorry for the run-on sentence, but it flows.

Yeah, how the hell does that happen? There aren't many guns here, so accidental shootings are out. Do people accidentaly stab others in the back while slicing cabbage? Accidentally run you over on the sidewalk?

Probably, "non-intentional homicide" refers to things like second-degree murder and manslaughter.
