Quite a few times, I've posted 'cut & pastes' from Wikipedia, & other accredited sources, only to have vitriolic personal attacks repudiating some, or all, of everything cited, as if I had personally written it. And it's not just on Daves ESL Cafe. Some of the other chat forums I haunt have their share of similar 'attack dogs'.
In future, I'm tempted to just put "see Wikipedia hyperlink", rather than cite, eg, from Wikipedia:
"Tokyo has been the capital city of Japan for 'x' number of decades" source: Wikipedia,
and have some smart alec say no, it isn't you idiot, Kyoto was the capital for centuries before the capital was moved to Tokyo. And then proceed with a string of invective. They rarely contibute anything factual or helpful to the entire thread either.
Thoughts?

Among academics, Wikipedia is not seen as a credible source for the following reason:
"Wikipedia is written collaboratively by volunteers from all around the world. With rare exceptions, its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the Internet, simply by clicking the edit this page link. The name Wikipedia is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a type of collaborative website) and encyclopedia. Since its creation in 2001, Wikipedia has rapidly grown into the largest reference Web site on the Internet.
In every article, links will guide you to associated articles, often with additional information. You are welcome to add further information, cross-references, or citations, so long as you do so within Wikipedia's editing policies and to an appropriate standard. You do not need to fear accidentally damaging Wikipedia when you add or improve information, as other editors are always around to advise or correct obvious errors, if needed, and the Wikipedia encyclopedia software, known as MediaWiki, is carefully designed to allow easy reversal of editorial mistakes.
Because Wikipedia is an on-going work to which in principle anybody can contribute, it differs from a paper-based reference source in some very important ways. In particular, older articles tend to be more comprehensive and balanced, while newer articles may still contain significant misinformation, unencyclopedic content, or vandalism. Users need to be aware of this in order to obtain valid information and avoid misinformation which has been recently added and not yet removed."
Taken straight from the wiki site.

Thanks cubanlord
That explains (but does not excuse) some of the abuse I've received. |

Down boy, down boy!
But seriously, I'm aware that academics do argue & debate (& that's healthy & encouraged) but sometimes, it's just over the top. |
