This is my advice to those who would like to go to China (Beijing area) without a tour package:

1) Get a cheap air ticket online. ( I got one for 250,000 won return )

2) Stay at the "Far East Hotel" - about a 3 star hotel, it was just 220RMB per night or you can stay in the dorms in the basement for 50-70RMB. You can walk or take the subway to some main areas. The lobby also has a desk set up where you can take tours to great wall, etc.

From the hotel you can get to:Wangfujin, Silk Market, Tiannamen, Temple of Heaven, and Summer Palace by subway. ( subway is 5 min walking fromn this hotel near the famous Roast Duck restaurant.

I agree (not with the hotel specifically, cause many hotels even in wanfujing are affordable) but doing Beijing without a package is easy and fun. There are plenty of places around to book tours of your choice.

Great fun. Great Experience.

I bought a ticket from China air...about 350,000 won.

Then found a hotel on planetholiday.com for about 40 bucks a night, right on wanfujing.

Then got on the plane, went to the hotel, and explored from there. Very very easy.

One doesn't get tied down with the restraints of one of those tourist packages.

I stayed there before----it's also in a nifty little shopping alley area.

I would do just one thing different -I'd get a one day tour and get get all the big attractions done with in one swoop...

Then go explore on your own----day and night. In some ways I disliked Beijing-a lot--but generally it was memorable..

Beijing is pretty damn dry.

Be adventurous and go to Inner Mongolia. Fresh, clean and there are beautiful people. Ride horses, eat authentic Mongolian dishes.

If you don't like the outdoors, then I'd recommend Shanghai.

i would love to be more adventurous, but given limited hagwon holidays, i will leave the bigger trips until my contract is up when i can explore properly.
should i do shanghai over beijing then?

Dude,

I'm going to Beijing in two days. Wish I were going to Shanghai instead. Anywayz, there is the Great Wall and some other things to see in Beijng. I can't really tell you what, I just remember the crowds, sums, bad taxi guys, and just really bad MoJo that I felt there.

Shanghai is at least a party place.
