Muslim girl ejected from tournament for wearing hijab

Five young teams from across Canada walked out of a Quebec soccer tournament Sunday because a young Muslim girl was ejected for wearing a hijab.

Calling the rule banning the headscarf worn by Muslim women racist, four other teams followed Asmahan Mansour's team, the Nepean Selects from Ottawa, after she was thrown out for running afoul of a Quebec Soccer Association rule.
"The referee was staring and pointing. 'She can't play,'" said Asmahan, Asi to her friends. "I was like why? Why can't I play?"
Because of a safety rule, league spokesman Lyes Arfa said. He pointed out that the referee is Muslim himself, and that the ban on hijabs is to protect children from being accidentally strangled.
"We have to protect the players on the field, and that's the main point. It's not against the Muslims."

Sounds reasonable, especially so since the referee himself is a Muslim. Just like Turkey. And also this part:

Congratulations! They are the winners, standing up on principle in an age of growing intolerance and prejudice. Young people have a clearer sense of simple justice. Safety? Hogwash. Muslim man not letting Muslim girl play, how contrary to his religious values! Now I'm being prejudiced.
The fact is: Let her play! is the message. And that's a good thing. Perhaps the sports hijab will be the solution.
The recent film Stick It (2006) is a good example of the values of the children. Damn fine. |

Aren't you imposing, then, your perception on someone who doesn't agree with you? I understand what the referee did, and I am not a fan of the hijab, and he was going by the rules. FIFA needs to rule on this, and they will rule that it's okay. It would be one thing if Canadian schools banned the hijab, but they don't. I don't see someone getting strangled by a hijab. It is understandable not to agree with Islam, but people have their own perceptions over their religion whether it is Islam or Judaism and they don't see it applied or interpreted the way you assume it is. It was nice that all these youth stood up for her. I do think it is unusual, though, to see a girl playing in hijab. |

Very practical thing to do on a sunny day.
Us guys used to wear our t-shirts on our heads while playing soccer, occasionally joking about turbans.
To each their own. Who cares? Let her play. |

Why not? I have nothing against a sikh with a turban playing soccer or a Jew with a kippa playing soccer. What's the big deal? |

The girl is 11 years old. Having her wear a veil is child abuse. I see kids as young as 2 or 3 here in Singapore totally cloaked like a KKK member. Sick, sick, sick. Putting a veil on a kid suggests a deeply dysfunctional father who is afraid of his own sexual attraction to his kid.
I will not endorse this child abuse. The girl should be removed from her home for child abuse and put in a nice, secular household where she will be free to be free. Enough of this. |

Some will call it freedom of religion, though I seriously dont see that argument. How is a parent forcing a sicko religious belief system on a child that has no mental capacity to really understand that religion anything else than brainashing and in cases such as this or circumsition actual child abuse? She should not be allowed to wear the hijab at all. No child should. |

| We must not accept their backwards cultural norms as norms in Canada. A veil on a kid is not ok. Maybe in Saudi it is normal, but that is a cesspool of a human crap-shoot of a human sink-pit, so we ought to do the exact opposite of them. |
