If you thought you had fractured a bone, say your upper forearm near the elbow, could you get by OK without any medical attention? Can it heal on its own without any long-term damage?

It depends on the severity of the fracture. If it fuses out of line, it could cause discomfort and problems in the future.

For the cost of medical attention here, if you have insurance, it's worth getting it checked out. I once, 3 years ago, had a hip x-ray, consultation with the Dr, and a session of physio for 25K, just to give you an idea of the costs.

Do you think it's any problem to wait a few days after the suspected fracture before going to the doctor?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I've has some "hairline" fractures from playing sports in my day. Never went to no stinkin' hospital. What could they really do? Put me in a dorky cast?

If the sheyat was OBVIOUSLY broken, the I would go.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. It hurts but not that much - the only problem is that while I can move my hand I can't really move my arm that much. I have to use my other arm to move it from the mouse to the keyboard, for instance. I'm just worried about next week when I have to start teaching. What if I can't write on the board? But I see your point - a dorky cast isn't really going to help in that regard, is it?

Fractures are generally accompanied by serious discoloration. ie. bruising.
I've let a few slide over the years without an x-ray.
Since you bothered to ask, GO to a clinic!
Little injuries do add up over time, I've found.

If it is just a hairline fracture, as you suspect, they proberly would strap it up rather then casting, as I said before it all depends on the severity. But consider that a reletively fresh fracture line can quite easily propagate into something more serious and painful, longer recovery time, with the slightest of falls or knocks.

If by any way you feel that the current injury is hindering movement, even without significant pain, which you mentioned is the case, go to hospital, it will take an hour at the most.

If you do get it in a sling, do you REALLY want every student, teacher and family mart person coming up to you and saying, "Ohhh, why?" "Soju? hahaha!"

Having it in a sling for a couple of weeks is better than any long term complications.
