I'll have two bags to check, one guitar and a laptop to carry on. I'll probably get fined for the extra carry on. I don't want to put either into the plane's belly. I was stupid and cheked my guitar once. The case did its job, but was crushed. I could pack my laptop deep in my suitcase, but...

I always pack my laptop and usually check in my (bass) guitar.

You're allowed two pieces of carry-on (one piece 'luggage' and one piece briefcase/laptop), so why not put your laptop in the overhead storage compartment?

Bring them both on the plane with you. The flight attendants will store your guitar somewhere in the passenger area for you.

I once checked my guitar and it was cracked during the flight. Fragile sticker or no fragile sticker, the handlers don't care.

If anyone says "carry-on limit", just tell them your guitar was damaged last time you flew and be adamant that you take it with you. They will let you.

I'll give it a shot. Last time they fined me on the return trip. They let me get away with it on the way there, but nailed me on the way back. Had I known what the fine was, I'd have sold the guitar for cheap in Korea and bought a new one when I got home. But, this time I'm carrying a Taylor, and won't sell it or put it into harm's way.

I also don't trust to check my laptop packed away. It'd probably make it; but I just bought it. So, I guess I'll chance the fine.

Most airlines (i.e. all the ones I:ve ever used) allow you one carry on and one "personal item (backpack, laptop,purse)". So yo ushould be OK. THey might give you crap about the size of your guitar being a carry-on though. WHen in doubt, pull out the tears. THats my motto.

I get to the door of the plane, and ask to "gate check".
they take it, hand carry it down, and hand carry back to the door of the plane when you get off.

Gate check is what they do with wheelchairs, and strollers. They'll also put things like the small pilot cases that don't fit in the overhead bins (usually when the plane is booked and there's just no room for them). They store them in the belly but it's in a different spot than where the regular luggage goes. I mean the guitar is rather large right? The overhead bins barely fit a large backpack and jacket, I don't see how the bin is going to fit something as long as the neck of the guitar. and it has to fully fit uner the seat in front or you. It should be fine as a gate checked item (I think).

I suggest just getting a cheap guitar in Korea - there are many music shops clustered together that sell all kinds of guitars - new and used (at least in Seoul...)

No, a cheap guitar will not do. I've got a love affair with this guitar. I know they've got good guitars there; but, to buy one that I'd be satisfied with will leave me with the same issue coming back.

I will be trying to take my camera bag, laptop and carry on onto the plane.

Strap the camera bag to the top of my carry on with a bit of tape and say it is part of the bag.
