6. Seoul, Korea
The Seoul Metropolitan Subway is one of the most heavily used subway systems in the world with more than 8 million daily trips. It is also one of the biggest subway stations worldwide, running 179.4 miles in length. The trains mostly run underground, but 30% of the system is above ground.
Highlights: Beautiful architecture. Growth of the system has been incredible over the past few years. Utilizes T-money, a prepaid transportation card for transport throughout the city. |

ROFLMAO! Is this the same dull, ugly subway system we all know and love? I will freely admit that Seoul has an excellent subway system, but architecture is decidedly NOT a selling point. |

Incidentally, I had a couple problems with two of the other subway systems on there. I found in Tokyo the subway system was very poorly laid out for foreigners. If you're outside the station there are almost always no English maps to show you where to go. Plus, there seem to be two alternating subway systems on top of each other, which I've never figured out. If they mentioned that Tokyo's subway system is helpfully bilingual, they should give Seoul's subway system far more kudos for being totally bilingual everywhere at all times.
Also, I was surprised to see Beijing's subway on there. It's pretty small, and only has four or so lines. Plus the transfers are treks that make Sadang look like a lemonade stand. To get to the elevated train line, you have to go outside, cross a street, and go up. |

how on earth can london underground be number one? even if i were the proudest englishman i would never claim that. its dirty, cramped, full of drunks and weirdos, and is probably five times as expensive as seoul. seoul metro is the railway of the gods compared to london underground! |

I think they are referring to the subway station architecture. I'm not sure I'd personally call it beautiful, but it does have some interesting features.
As for the rankings, I have a hard time calling any non-24 hour subway system the best in the world. Just like I couldn't call any city where the bars close before midnight the best in the world. |

Moscow should be no. 1 as far as i've seen.
sure the trains are older, but they are fast and frequent. 3 minutes is the longest you'll wait on a platform at any station at any time. midnight on Tuesday, 3 minutes. peak hour it's more like 90 seconds between trains.
and the subway stations are unbelievably beautiful, statues, tile mosaics, etc. |

I second the idea that Moscow should be #1 on the list. Beautiful stations and fast, frequent trains. Not to mention cheap! 10 rubles for a single ride (about $0.38).
As Pyongyang is basically an attempted copy of the Moscow Metro, it would probably also be a good system if fully operational. All the pictures I've seen show stations similar to those in Moscow.
About Seoul, my comment of "ugly" was talking about the stations. There are some that grab the eye (i.e. Chungmuro), but most are very plain and basic. They have all the appeal of a public washroom. While they are cleaner than some (*cough* New York *cough*), they are neither constructed to look grand (Washington D.C.), nor are they interesting to see (Moscow). |

Hey, they're using the video I took of the subway. Nice. That's me holding the phone there.

Seriously I would have to question the metrics used to rate the subway system when a line without even rudimentary air-conditioning turns out number one. |

Does anyone know anybody who works for the Subway System, preferably in marketing/advertising/public relations? I have an idea for them that would blow that campaign they had a while back with the baseball player and the airline stewardess out of the water. |

I reckon Glasgow's subway nicknamed 'Clockwork Orange' could rival them all. Highest proportion of drunks and people talking to themselves per square metre AND it only takes 27, yes 27 minutes to go all the way around it. Don't think many other subways can lay claim to that now can they? |
