I had this theory. Just say someone is put in jail for 30 years so theya re released when they are 70. ie the term is designed to give them a very short time once outside.
What if medical breakthoughs 30 years from now increase the life of a person to like 140 years old? Thanks means that person would then live for another 70 years. Spooky. |

I think medical advances would have to be applied throughout your life so your like a 30 yr old when you are 40 yr old and a 35 year old when you are 50 and so on. If you recieve those advances whilst your in prison then yea..your theory would work. |

Well, there is research into actually reversing old age so that someone could be truly (not just in appearance) young again.

If someone ever found a way to make that work then your theory would work. |

Is this going to decrease age discrimination in Korea? |

Was anyone else disappointed to open this thread and find that it doesn't contain a theory at all? It's a question or at best, an observation.
On a more positive note, I just found a mini-pack of Golden Grahams in my hotel room. |

I think after serving anything longer than 20 years, it doesn't make a difference. People become institutionalized and can't cope with living in the outside world. At least that's what I've learned from The Shawshank Redemption. If you're in prison 30 years and come out at 70, there's no way you're gonna adjust back into a normal life. |

Medical breakthroughs notwithstanding - I think things like being gang raped in the shower would decrease one's life expectancy. |

Its stupid. Time is time. Just because your life can be extended doesnt change the fact that you lost 40 years of your life, now does it. |

You should also have your sentence reduced if you enjoy prison too much, enjoy gang rape, or watched every episode of Prison Break.
Although a world where you lived twice as long may mean you having to take half the risks. If your life expectancy doubles then you could also expect the chances of a bus running you over to double also. |

No, it doesn't. But I think part of the anguish of having lost that much time, is also the fact that you end up with so little left. If you come out with the prospect of having ANOTHER 70 years to play with, then I think it's more equivalent to doing a 5-7 year stretch when you're in your 20's or 30's. Yes, the time is lost, but life thereafter is manageable.
I think the original point is flawed though. I don't think prison terms of that length are designed with the objective of letting you out when you only have a few years left. I think they are more designed in that you serve a period of time appropriate to your offense, regardless of how long you can expect to live. |

They'll need a whole new speech level to cope with it. |
