Anybody had any experience with their Korean wife expecting their parents to cough up money. My wife wants to buy a condo and we don't have enough money for a downpayment. She wants to me to ask my Dad, who is retiring next year. To ask him seems grossly unfair and utterly emasculating for me. I told her that we don't really do this in Canada but she says all her Canadian co-workers expect the same. Irony is her Canadian co-workers are all Indo-Canadian or Chinese-Canadian and have different values from a WASP like me.

Do WASP families actually help their "kids" (I'm 35) with downpayments on houses? Anybody else dealt with this?

Dude you're asking us to generalize about an entire ethnic group.

Personally, I wouldn't do it, but others would. Tell your wife it's time to cowboy up and stop expecting everything on a silver platter. Razz

Generally speaking, there is no way in this world that a W.A.S.P. would feel down with asking Mom and/or Dad for anything after the age of about twenty three.

P.M. me if you believe that another W.A.S.P. could be of assistance in this matter.

Cordially,

R

Might I so humbly ask what W.A.S.P. refers to? Sounds like an evil organization from a Bond movie.

Dumbo that I am, I meant, in a general sense, that the Big Nose People have a built-in bias against asking Mom and/orDad for shite after they graduate although many do just that, Dude.

I was responding to kotakji, though I agree with your description of Dirty White Boys' views on asking the parents for shit.

Wanna know what a WASP is think of Charlotte and her husband (the Scottish one) on Sex and the City. They are stereotypical WASPs.

Sorry can't offer much beyond that I was raised as a WASC (White Anglo Saxon Catholic) that was in the middle class no man's land. Too much money to qualify for assistance or discounts and not enough money to actually do anything.

By 35, I'd say that well is pretty much dry. Wink

If you're father knew you were even asking such a quesiton on a message board, he'd probably think you were guay.

All families are different. I personally would not dream of asking my mom and dad for money while I'm in Korea and could sacrifice and save for a year or two (while my Korean wife does the same) and thus would have $100,000 in a couple years. Your wife didn't marry a Korean, and the rules of the game are different for us. Just ignore her on this one, don't allow her to be the man in the relationship. Korean women will be differential to their husbands if you put your foot down.

You are being used, what is her motivation? Why not explain to her that people in the west WORK HARD and then buy a house. Don't give your parents that kind of stress, and don't let her make the decisions.

42 Canadian Male. Haven't asked family for anything since I was about 18. Can't imagine doing so unless there was a dire emergency, and buying a house doesn't count.

If both of you are working it shouldn't take that long to save up the money you need. If you have an f5 take up some privates. I have been on my own and would never ask my parents for money. They deserve a stress free retirement and well they earned it I hope they spend every penny and then there will be no vultures circling when they pass. (they have pre-paid) funerals.
