I agree. In the same breadth those savage africans were WAAAAAAAAAAAAY better off being taken from that hell of a hole in Africa and allowed to serve their white masters in the civilized world. And now look, theri descendents get to be American citizens instead of living in freaking Burkina Faso or whetever and starving! Thats like WAY WAY WAY cool for them, they should stfu about slavery and all that jazz.

Back to the thais, whats putting up with some twisted fat pig for a night when you can get a super duper cell phone! Its all worth it if its a hot pink Razr!

Spot on Jinju....

IG that was probably the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Guess we know someone who's been doing "wonders for the economy" among other things

get off your high horse!!!

The scary part is that Itae-guy is right... at least partly.
The girls who do end up with a fat, smelly, ugly, old farang are usually the lucky ones. It's the ones who are trapped in prison-type brothels at about age 13 to service Chinese nationals that are really in trouble.

I am in no way endorsing the sex tourism trade, but I do think the Western men treat them a lot better than they would be otherwise treated.
Read the book, it is really scary what goes on in Thailand.

As for Korea, I don't think poverty is the driving force, but certainly the desire for "easy cash" is still there. A Korean friend of mine was telling me that there are constantly stories in the media here about young girls who run away from their parents........because they want to escape the misery of studying 16 hours a day. They have no skills and no way to make money, so they turn to the sex trade. Then when they see the money rolling in, it's very hard for them to stop.

Anyway, I am not here to judge anyone. I have the same desires as any red-blooded man, but what I saw going on in Thailand made me ill.
The worst part was that I had to fight myself so hard to not become part of the problem. I can see how easy it would be to start down that road.
But as I looked around at all the fat old farangs, half-cut and looking none too healthy, I asked myself "do you really want to end up like one of these?"....God help me.

Stupid comparison. Like Thai sex workers teachers who teach privates are providing a service for money. You are basically saying that Thai sex workser rape farangs for 50 bucks an hour.

And I would never do a private where I teach kids. 50 bucks an hour to teach kids is like being raped, I wouldnt do it for twice that. Corporate classes are a different matter.

Its not about crime but abour expoitation of poor for money to fill some twisted need.

Why don't you hop off your, 'I-can-feel-justified-sleeping-with-3rd world- hookers,-because-I-give-them-money-to-buy-cool-clothes' hobby horse first?

It's not a matter of supporting crime. If that were true how can you say people frequenting prostitutes are doing good?

It's the fact, as Jinju rightly says, that visiting Thai hookers is an exploitation of the poor. The more people thinking like you, the more likely it is this economic slave trade will carry on its merry way.

Comparing it to doing private lessons is as ridiculous a comparison as your initial post. Teachers doing privates are providing a service that the ajummas want and are prepared to pay for. You could argue, and I'm sure you will, that naughty ladies of the night are doing the same, but at least the teachers have other options and choices about doing it. That and the teachers get to keep their money instead of having the bulk of it go to making some sleazy, low life, pimp richer.

Maybe I'm on a high horse, fair play. But just don't run around saying, "it's all good", because the girls get mobile phones and cool clothes. That's just crass beyond belief.

This thread might leave the uninitiated with the false impression that a disproportionate number of Thai women are involved in the sex trade, or that most Thais condone the practice. Nothing could be further from the truth. Even a passing understanding of Thai culture would garner one that much awareness.

This has got to be one of the lamest, least informed, and most insensitive remarks I've ever read on Dave's. Do you have any idea how much poverty there is in the Thai countryside? The parents of these girls by and large are not lazy, nor have they made bad choices because most have had no choices. Yes, most (but not all--many are duped or enticed into non-existent legitimate metro jobs) of the girls make the choice to enter the sex trade but it is surely a choice many agonize over. Sweet cash is more bittersweet when you're doing something you'd rather not do. Sure, some girls might be motivated by materialism; most, however, are solely motivated by filial obligation (something on the wane in Western cultures).

Naw, of course not! You're just an unwitting apologist for the predator farang who wrote that book. Being there beats books any time but if you must rely on a book you're far better off reading Patpong Sisters by Cleo Odzer, an American feminist writer and anthropologist who lived with a prostitute long-term and spent time with her family. She offers a more conducive gender perspective and while her research in certain respects is seriously flawed (e.g., one of the young men who works as a tout in the red light district becomes her lover and informant) she at least offers a sympathetic view.

you're on the mark there. Buddhism is about controlling your desires, not being controlled by them. But on the other hand, the Thai have a deep sense of obligation and duty towards their parents.

Even if a bar-girl is making top dollar, i don't think it would be envious...after taking care of her families needs and some amusements for herself (clothes, handphone), how much could she save in order to start a new career once she's no longer attractive enough to compete with all the younger and prettier girls?

by frequenting hookers you are supporting the economy!!
if you dont see it that way then you are blind my friend!!

a poor little farmers daughter comes down from ISAN and now makes 1000- 2000USD a month!! with that money she can buy the lastest clothes and cellphones have a life she could only dream of!! BUT!!
where we see the real positive side is she is sending home 1000 USD a month to her family where she can put her sister through school and support her relatives!! so that the younger siblings might have a better chance for the future and not need to make the bus trip to bangkok!!

if she was not working in the redlight, IE sleeping with fat farangs as you put it.. her family would be so poor that her younger sister would have to be working in some sweat factory for 9 hours a day for 3 dollars and her father and mother would not be able to put food on the table!!!
but I GUESS in your eyes!! thats much better than sleeping with a foreigner and supporting 10 people in a family!! and thats just one girl!!!!

I dont see sleeping with a hooker wrong!!! if fact I see paying them under 100 dollars wrong!! becuase any hooker back home will be charging you double! but then again I would never sleep with a hooker back home!!
these girls in 3 world countries NEED YOUR SUPPORT! as bad as it sounds, thats the hard cold reality of some places in the world!!
and if you dont support it, then they go hungry!!
but I guess you would rather see them starve to death for moral reasons!
well good for you buddy boy!!

ID rather give a thai hooker 2000BHT than eat a steak in a fancy restaurant!!!
becuase I know the money helps the thai hooker more..
do you stop buying petrol for moral reason??
do you refuse to drink starbucks coffee or wear nike?? becuase it exploits children in sweat factories or the farmers of peru are being raped by corperations??? at least with thai hookers the money goes into their hands!! AND NOT SOME CORPERATION...

and if you want to say it doesnt.. you are doing nothing more than trying to win this arguement.. I know I sound terrible, or like a bastard etc..
I didnt make the world as it is. and if you think, ONE MAN can make a world of difference, just stop supporting the sex trade, stop wearing nike etc.. it would only hurts those at the bottom of the spectrum!!

like I said, the world is a cold place.. but thats just the way it is..
am I wrong??

He is right that frequenting prostitutes does boost the economy and if capital gain is the highest good, then it's fine. I don't agree, though.
Yes, many of these girls are trying to send money to their families, they see that those who work in those bars make so much more than them. It is partially choice for some, because when they see other girls making 20 times more than them or more and they think of the back breaking labour in the fields, then they are tempted. The girl in the story was making money on some farm, but it was far below that of her friend who was working in the bars. Yes, she didn't want to be a prostitute. I am sure the girls have an idea what is going on in Bangkok. She probably wanted to believe there was a way to not work on a farm and make more money.

Of course, many Western men go to Thailand and are surrounded by all these ladies trying to drag them into their establishments. That is what I heard. Never been to Thailand. There needs to be more opportunity for those girls in order to stop that.

Steve, you talk about morals. For many people, taking care of your own pleasure, having material goods, objects is becoming more and more important even for the poor. It is like we have become objectified. Many of the Korean girls who engage in the trade are not starving and were not, either. I am sure some of that is at play in Thailand. Yes, the girls in Thailand and the Phillipines are more desperate and the ones in Manila are pressured to do something to support their parents and brothers and sisters, so they dive into that seedy, unfortunate world. Things have become more desperate for the people down there. Many men these days don't really care that much about a woman's feelings, because we are more of a me culture now. More men these days compared with the past are willing to lie to a woman to bed her in their home countries.
The women have their own problems as well. People are focused on their selfish pleasures and material ones and it does play a role in why these women sometimes join this trade.

Well put. I'm glad you can discern the difference in "need" between prostitutes in a developing vs. developed country. I must admit, Adventurer, at the risk of being patronizing, that I have underestimated your judgment. Globalization has undeniably led to a rising tide of expectations, not only materially, but broadly in terms of what the impoverished expect life to give them. Then again, it could be they wanted it all along and we in the West were wrong to assume they didn't, too easily characterizing them as noble savages in the sense Montaigne described centuries ago. Perhaps it only seems like a money grab now because for the first time real opportunities to lift oneself out of poverty actually exist, however distasteful those choices might be.

One thing we've overlooked or at least haven't discussed is the continued tendency of many rural parents to privilege the education of their sons and to expect daughters to submit to harsh conditions to provide for them. This expectation coupled with the Thai custom of not attaching as much stigma to prostitution as elsewhere has indeed induced this trend.

I'm sure that visiting Patpong will boost the economy, but then again, so will buying the steak dinner you mention, as well as paying for your accommodation. Anything you spend your money on, in the given country, will boost the economy. That's just another reason I'm inclined to think your argument is just a self serving justification. If you can't see that my friend, then it's you who are blind.

You're right to say that there is good in the fact these working girls can support their families, and spare siblings a similar fate, although I think you're inflating their incomes a bit. I know it's not the fault of the girls, or the johns for that matter, but I would hope that Thailand and other countries where poverty means one child in a family needs to be sacrificed to allow the rest to prosper, would be able to develop other industries, that pay a living wage. For a Thai girl weighing up the options of all day shifts in a factory for less than a dollar a day, or becoming a working girl for much, much more, to me sounds like the proverbial rock and hard place. So while I accept that life is hard for many, I'm still not prepared to say that it's all OK.

The only difference I can make is to my own world, and the people I encounter. My choice would be to not support the prostitutes, because, frankly, they're never going to starve. Visiting Thailand, I prefer to spread it around buying what I want, prepared to pay slightly inflated 'street' prices because it helps someone out, tipping in a country where I don't have to, buying a meal for some streetkids and giving a few bucks to beggars I come across.

Where I really take exception to what you say IG, is the glossing over of the poverty and criminal enterprise that's behind this industry. You say these girls have choices, maybe so but they're not very satisfactory. The crass materialism of justifying it all for a cell phone just really grates.

Widescale prostitution in Thailand and south Korea is symptomatic of the institutionalised oppresion of women. yes you are helping the economy by indulging (4% of Koreas GDP), but what you are doing is also condoning a culture whereby women are denied powerful or even equal opportunities in society, and must engage in a dangerous and morally questionable activity to advance economically.

In South korea- if women had equal employment opportunities do you think you would see barber shops on every street corner? No.

Confused

I never said people from other nationalities are free from blame, I was merely reiterating what I had read in the book.

It says that there exist in Thailand prison-type brothels that cater specifically to Chinese nationals. If you want to take me to task on this, that's up to you. I'm just saying what the book said. The author goes on to describe how poor rural families are exploited by the Thai mafia and corrupt government and often end up selling their daughters into such establishments.

WTF? Thank you Snotty Steve for that skin-depth analysis.

How do you know the author is a predator?
Actully the book was co-authored by Derek Sharron and Areerut Sudha and is perported to be the true life story of the girl. I imagine the role of Mr. Sharron was that of editor, someone to help her with her writing style etc. I'm sure the book you named is quite informative as well, but why don't you do a little research before you go jumping all over someone?

So someone's life story is an "unsympathetic view"?

Shocked

I am not sure what your point is, perhaps you could enlighten me.

I understand your point of view clearly!! dont get me wrong..
all I am stating is the reality on a different prospective than you are.
both sides are right.. they are just different morally and ethically.
Sure there is a crime enterprise behind SEX! but that can be said about so many other businesses! even fortune 500 companys!
when you buy an indian carpet made in india we are supporting the exploitation of children!
buying rough cut diamonds is supporting the army and wars in africa etc..
buying starbucks coffee, or wearing nikes!!
and these are just a couple off the top of my head! im sure there are items around me right now which exploit or blood is spilled over which I just dont know about!
it happens everyday in this world. as I keep saying this world is a cold and dark place in some parts! but my opinion still stands on thai sex workers! OF COURSE only the ones who are freelancing or choose to work by their own accord I do not feel pity for them! I do how ever feel emotional towards them in reminding myself how lucky I am to be born into a good home! but I will not tell myself its exploitation of them! because they need my money! of course I dont need their sex! but they need to get paid from me..
of course if prostitution was not an option in thailand! then these girls would work in factories! and make nike shoes for 1 dollar a day! while phil knight makes 5billion dollars off them!

fact is sex has been here for a long time and it still is, and women are being exploited for it and many choose to do it for an income !
its a service at the end of the day! but I do not endorse sex with woman who have been forced into this way of life by force or harm to them.
that is a serious crime ! but of course how can you really know if that girl you picked up from a go go has been forced or sold into that life!! you dont! just as you dont know if that cup of joe is non fair trade coffee!
you try to read the signs bests you can..
buying coffee that goes straight to the farmers!
or buying sex from a freelancer etc..

I have only pity that they have to do that job becuase their parents messed up in their lives and now the girl has made a choice to work the GO GOs... but they make sweet cash!! so I dont feel sorry for them once they are in the scene!!
