I hope you know Memories of Murder was based on a real serial killer who has never been caught. And in Korea, a small town can still have hundreds of thousands of people.

Movie's I've seen:

Shiri: can't really remember it well now but I mostly liked it
Silmido: liked it despite its historical embellishments and at times melodrama.
Save the Blue (or Green?) Planet: enjoyed it, wished the ending wasn't so rushed
Memories of Murder: liked it, understood more how the police worked back then
The Host: enjoyed it, wasn't too bothered by "anti-Americanism," but didn't like the way the ending worked out

Favourite Korean movie of all time: an '80s soft-core movie sometimes shown late at night. A woman has a very unsatisfying love life with her husband. Once when he's out, a masked rapist attacks her. She doesn't tell anyone, and he keeps returning and raping her again and again. Gradually she comes to love it, as all women apparently do if they're violently assaulted according to the director. At the end it turns out the rapist is her husband.

The Host (gwaymul) - Terrible. Equal to kneeling down and smelling a pile of dog crap for two hours.

Most others have been decent to good.

My favourite Korean films:

A Bungee Jumping of Their Own (2001) - melodramatic but intriguing (cynics will hate it, though!)

The Host (2006)

My Sassy Girl (2001) - the first & best of the goofy comedies

Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005)

Someone Special (2004) aka A Woman I Know - very quirky!

Memories of Murder (2003)

King and the Clown (2005) aka A King's Man

No Regret (2006) - just out on DVD (gay independent film by one of Korea's "out" writer-directors - the most popular independent film so far released here)

Definitely worth a look:

...ing (2003)

The Unforgiven (2005) - interesting independent film that skewers military service

-Il Mare (2000) - remade last year in the US as The Lake House

JSA (2000)

Over-hyped Korean films I really didn't care for:

Friend (2001)

You Are My Sunshine (2005)

Taegukgi (2004)

And here's a great site for everything you've ever wanted to know about Korean films:

http://www.koreanfilm.org/

(All of the above are reviewed there.)

And the best online store for Korean movies (better than yesasia.com and usually cheaper & faster too):

http://www.dvdfromkorea.com

Happy viewing.

Shiri - standard action movie...forgotten 10 minutes after it ended but entertaining.

JSA - OVery interesting story (the North-South soldiers becoming friends) and good ending (even if he dies). The girl playing the investigator was however weak.

Friend - One of the better Korean movies I saw. It is a simple story but well presented and with strong characters. The end is also very strong.

Marathon- Quite good.

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance- An excellent movie. Simple but so effective

Old Boy - One wild ride with a twist at the end that leaves you stunned and cringing.

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance- The weakest of the trilogy (see above) but the "choice" at the end was a great discussion topic for those of us with kids and for anyone as a matter a fact!

Memories of a Murder -Excellent cop movie. Simple, realistic. Its nice to see a cop movie with no crazy gun fights or car chases, just hometown cops with their faults and strenghts.

Peppermint Candy - A very good movie.

Taeguki- A decent war flick if a bit over the top, especially at the end.

Oasis- Wow....that was a daring subject to tackle...well done

Crying Fists - Good drama that takes all its strenght from the final fight

Musa - Epic medieval drama. Huge scale. Good fights. Soem good acting but a pop corn flick nevertheless.

The Way home - Simple but extremely effective movie. The grandmother in that movie is just stunning and her role is amazing for her quiet strenght.

Attack the gas station - A hilarious comedy...a must see.

Sex for Zero - Another good comedy...especially the "egg" sandwhich scene.

Foul King - Comedy again but gets serious too. Very good job.

Silmido - Could ahve been better.

Coast Guard - Interesting psychological drama but not all that great in the end.

Sassy Girl - Bubble gum movie

Save my hubby - Good comedy...popcorn flick

Failan - Good drama. The end is also very good.

Little Monk - A bit of a tear jerker but not too bad

Spring, summer, fall, winter, spring (or something) - Long but very interesting movie.

My wife is a gangster (not sure bout the title) - Very good comedy.

Thats it for now...the list goes on for me....

Korean movies I loved:

Memories of Murder/살인의 추억
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance/친절한 금자 씨
Please Teach Me English/영어 완전 장복
The President's Last Bang/그 때 그 사람들
Bad Guy/나쁜 남자
3 Iron/빈 집
Comrade/이중간첩
Crazy Marriage/결혼은 미친 짓이다
Oasis/오아시스
Road Movie/로드 무비

Korean movies that were not my favorites, but still worth seeing:

Singles/시글즈
Natural City/내츄럴 시티 - a rare Korean sci-fi movie
Christmas in August - 팔월의 크리스마스
Jenny and Juno/제니 주노
JSA
My Sassy Girl/엽기적인 그녀

Korean movies that never should have been made:

Welcome to Dongmakgol - nationalistic anti-American garbage
Remembrance of the Turning Gate/ 생활의 발견 (see below)
Woman is the Future of Man/여자는 남자의 미래다 - poorly acted pointless movies with dull dialogue that serve as little more than vehicles for some very unpleasant sex scenes
Wet Dreams - 몽정기 Really stupid schmaltzy comedy about middle school boys discovering sex. Only worth watching if you want to see Seon-a Kim (aka Kim Sam-soon) back when she was still hot. Let me warn you now, whatever you do, DO NOT watch the sequel about middle school girls discovering their sexuality. This may well scar you for life.
Sex is Zero - 색즉시공 Sex comedy about college kids. There are a few good laughs, but I nearly clawed my eyeballs out by the end of this movie because of the schmaltz.

Have you ever watched Taeguki?! Even if one can not understand Han Guk Mal, an intelligent-minded sort will understand that this is an, obviously, very good drama face-to-face international standards of judging a film.

Please check it out.

Oasis.
One of a few Korean movies I would suggest as a MUST SEE. Absolutely stirring performances and brilliant subject matter

Taeguki.
Pretty intense fight scenes sandwhiched with terrible writing and mediocre acting.

Please Teach Me English (or something like that)
My (foreign) wife loves it. Frankly, it wasn't all that great for me.

Friends (Chin-gu).
Okay. don't remember much other than thinking it was "okay"

My Teacher, Mr Kim (or something like that).
Cute. I've never figured out what it is about Korean movies where they have to have gut wrenchingly sad endings.

PoomHaeJero (No manners)
A strange movie. Supposed to be a comedy. Not convinced many foreigners would laugh.....at all....and again with the disturbing fight scene.

Memories of Murder.
As mentioned, a great cop movie cause it makes cops (in small towns) look more like what they are. A DEFINITE renter.

The "Revenge" trilogogy by ....______________
Sympathy for Mr. Vengance
Old Boy
Sympathy for Lady Vengance.

All three of these movies kicked such serious ass. Really, these three movies were totally brilliant, start to finish.

Shilmido:
A fine movie. Quite a bit of melodrama..maybe too much.

Welcome to DonMatgol:
Cutsy, boring. I didn't get the anti-americanism, so much as the anti-"let's make a quality movie"ism.
Nothing would draw me to watch this again.

Marathon:
Not convinced I watched enough of it to get a good opinion but it didn't really seem like there was much to it. Another non-handicapped actor, but sadly, he doesn't do as good a job as others.

There are very few movies that I saw that I would suggest you avoid altogether, but I would DEFINITELY suggest that:

Oasis
Sympathy for Mr. Vengance
Old Boy
Sympathy for Lady Vengance.

get watched. If you want to see the bEST of Korean cinema, I'd think it'd be these 4....MAYBe also "memories of murder"

Homer, a review of a movie shouldn't include spoilers, especially the ending. Now people who haven't seen the movies you reviewed don't need to as you spoiled them.

Indeed superhero...however what spoilers are you talking about????

Does "great ending" or "this scene will floor you" or "this role was excellent" qualify as a spoiler?

Its not like I said "you will freak out when you find out this guy was the culprit!"...geezzzz Laughing

I stopped reading after I saw this.
