I have a friend who is considering going to Korea to teach, but the only kind of alcohol he likes at all is German an Belgian beer. Are either of these things available at all? I know they're probably expensive, but they're already $10-$15 a bottle over here, so I don't imagine it could be so much more expensive.

Go to Platimum in Gangnam, exit 8,drink all the Belgian beer you want and eat all you want, great buffet also, for 23 000won, can't beat it. If you don't like Belgian beer, they have a good variety of others as well.

There are quite a few decent micro-breweries that I'm positive must be getting their recipes from the Fatherland...however, I think they're getting their prices from Monte Carlo. Tell your mate to bring his cheque-book.

There's that one place, Castle Praha, in Gangnam that's got some really good beers. Brauhaus is aweful; the beer gives you a damned wicked hangover. Platinum issss...ok. The Morphine is worth the trip, and yeah, the belgium there is serviceable.

Castle Praha has good beer, but it's a tad expensive. Platinum has a wider selection and the quality isn't bad.

Pretty much. Just walk straight for a few seconds. It has two signs; one says "Platinum beer factory", the other says "On Stone steak house". If you reach Beer Hunter, you've gone too far.

"Ice Bars" are fairly common.

With them you sit at the bar or at a large table and there's a large ice-filled trough of sorts with international beers poking out.

Duvel and Guinness might set you back 6-7 or so,a Lowenbrau 5.

Only option outside of that is Costco,E-Mart et al.

No large beer barns in Korea.

Wow, damn that's cheap.

And for reference, I live in Massachusetts. The beer is cheaper in the stores, but is still around $10 generally. MA has a high alcohol tax though, so that could be it.

$10 a bottle?! you can get a case for that in Georgia. Those tax rates sound more like Norway then the northeast
