I've already sent all my documents for my school to process the E2 visa, and a week later, they are telling me that they want me to come in earlier with a tourist visa because they need me ASAP. They're also telling me that my visa is getting approved later than usual, so they want me in Korea ASAP....

they say that they will pay for my japan visa run.
but I'm confused... does this mean that I have to apply for an E2 in Japan? or just get stamped?

does this sound normal?

thanks..

It occurs frequently. Sometimes it's legitimate, but often it's used as a way to test drive the teacher. Just let them know that you aren't working until you get your E-2. And stick to it. If you can do that, the free trip to Japan is worthwhile. Otherwise, you'll be working illegally. While the chances of being nabbed are small, you have zero rights without an E-2. You'll probably want to ask your teacher contacts at the school if they have a history of fulfilling the visa run before work begins.

It works the same as going to a Korean consulate in your home country, except the consulate is in Japan. It shouldn't require any extra paperwork. They just put the visa in your passport and it's activated once you return to Korea.

It's pretty common but it's probably easier/safer to do it before you arrive. There's a teacher at my school who'd been told again and again that they were sending her soon. Her tourist visa has been expired for almost 2 months. Not sure what will happen once she tries to leave Korea when they finally do send her. She lost her passport though and has been issued a new one with no stamps whatsoever. Have them send you quickly.

It took about three weeks for my visa to be processed in Korea, after I accepted the job in my home country. I'm sure that it could have been done faster if it was needed. Near the three week mark, I was sent a confirmation email that my visa had been processed and approved. The Korean embassy at home processed my visa the day I gave it to them.

If you don't feel comfortable you can always just tell them that you can't come early.

I know a guy who got busted working on a tourist visa.

Don't do it. Tell them they can wait. The reality is, they will have to. They aren't going to find another teacher quickly.

You shouldn't work a day without an E2 Visa for your employer. Avoid putting yourself in that position if you can. Don't board the plane until the E2 Visa is in your hand.

Now, how would they know that your visa is getting approved later than usual?

This song and dance about needing you in Korea ASAP is very "normal." However, it doesn't make it okay. If you give into this common ploy, they will screw you over. Stakes are high and they are not in your favor.

Could be Mr. Moon is going to screw you in the bunghole because he's looking to sell the school and leave you high and dry like he is going to do/is doing to all the current teachers.

No need of it.

Forget about immigration, the above is your greatest risk.

OR

It could work out fine. Just remember to get what's due to you. Make sure you get paid from the agreed upon start date. Don't let them try to slime their way out of the time you spend there before your visa is processed. Make sure they pay medical and pension. Make sure taxes are deducted correctly. Make sure you get overtime paid for and make sure they're not screwing with your schedule. List is endess.

Take you pick.

My school sent me over without a visa. My crooked boss tried to make me work when i had no visa but i refused after repeated requests. He got things done for the visa really quick after that.

And don't believe what your boss or the foreigners tell you over the phone. There are a lot of tools who will lie to you over the phone because they think they'll get in good with the Koreans.

Doesn't matter how soon they need you. Without the visa, you would be working illegally (plus you would still need to pay for the visa run). They are going to pay for both your flight over AND the visa run? Ha! Not bloody likely!

Do not leave home without the visa issuance number. They can't force you to work illegally whether you are there or not, so why waste time going earlier?

Don't even consider going on a tourist visa.

Actually, just that request would be enough for me to dump them.
