Since I've lived here, I've met a college professor from the USA who was teaching at Suwon University for 6 months. I know some guys from France who are sales reps for French companies that produce goods in Korea. There's another French guy who is a sort of bank-stock broker.
Overall, however, the foreigners who are here as compared to a place like Shanghai, HongKong, or Tokyo are much more likely to be teachers. The expats here are unique in that sense. You will never meet any military guys in Sh or HK. For some reason (I have a theory about that reason) business people dont seem as likely to live in Seoul as compared to other places in Asia.... Of course, this is all based on my personal experience... |

If you go to Geoje Island, you will a ton of foreigners near the shipyards, as well as Ulsan, Busan, and a tiny bit near Mokpo. Geoje island has it's own expat website, but can't remember the link.
Most of these ships are built for foreigners, american and european, and there are always a handful of them acting as "owner's representatives" making sure the ships are built with no problems and according to specification.
My other guess as to where more foreigners could be are near the Samsung semiconductor plants, as well as some of the automotive plants.

i read that one of the characteristics of developed countries is that its culturally/ethnically diverse.
i guess 대한민국 is not quite there yet?

I believe there are two types of foreign workers. The actual laborers are from Kazakstan, southeast asia, china, etc (low income countries), but i think Korea has a cap of something like 20% or something for employing foreigners. These foreign workers however can move from company to company looking for a better job without worrying about Visa sponsorship.
The other types are the experts, managers, engineers, etc.. I've been in the Samsung shipyard several times and there are tons of foreigners. For instance, ships are built to a standards organization, Lloyds register is one of them based in the UK, a large percentage of them are foreigners, but with educated backgrounds. I think there are at least 60 of them in Korea.
Since GM has purchased some of Daewoo's plants, my guess is there are some GM managers here as well, middle managers, etc..
Samsung does alot of hiring of Gyopos in their technology divisions, but you must be very educated, such as Phd or many years experience.
I heard vageuly there are about 3 million foreigners living in Korea? Don't know if that includes people from the low income countries doing just labor work versus management or technical work. |

In the city I live in there are as many engineers as there are teachers...
However they tend to go to come out and go to bed a little earlier than the teaching crowd... |

I think a lot of it has to do with tough visa restrictions, tough business laws, and Korean attempts to control business. It stifles development here. Maybe dogbert can fix my possible misunderstandings of this situation, but if memory serves, there was a bank that was purchased by a foreign entity and bailed out during IMF. Years later, after the Korean economy and bank recovered, Koreans sued/revolted/blamed, etc., this foreign company for "stealing" the Korean bank at too low of a price. The gov't has been attempting to round up those involved in the deal recently, and void the deal totally.
Again, my information may be a bit off, but I sort of get the impression that Korea is quick to ask for hand-outs, but also quick to bite the hand that feeds it once things turn around. It doesn't exactly encourage people to do business here.
If you want to meet business-types, you'll find a lot of these foreigners at the Itaewon main street drinkie bars (not the hooker hill, which is dead due to MP patrols keeping GIs out). Places like Footloose, Onyva, Ginger Bar, etc.. They are jam-packed with girls and "clients." Clients are businessmen who are not afraid of dropping 100,000 won on drinks just to talk to a pretty girl for an hour or so. I'm pretty sure some of them drop a lot more for other "outside-of-the-bar" activities with some of the girls, although it's not as in-your-face as what happens on hooker hill.
Most of the girls working at the "upper-scale" business clubs are working for cash to buy that Gucci purse, pay for family issues, or even to learn English and maybe meet some rich guy. If you want to meet a really hot girl who is interested in you for your wallet, then this is the place to go. Definitely not a place for teachers or GIs.
The infamous "hooker hill" is more of a nasty hole than ever. You used to get cat-calls from attractive girls there, but you'll notice on your way up to Polly's Kettle, that they are all bottom-of-the-barrel scrags that made big bucks years ago, but are aging into their 30s and 40s, now unable to get a job doing anything else. They're dying a slow, agonizing death, along with a few younger 250lb chunky-butts teetering on heels and poured into outfits they shouldn't be wearing, scrounging for cash off of the Nigerians and Middle Easterners on their way back from the Mosque. Gone are the hopes of snagging some young GI to save them and their family's money problems. They really look hopeless. Someone should bulldoze the entire area and make way for apartment development.

Oh gawd, why would you bother trying to pick up one of those drinkie girls? Waste of time, money, and effort -- but altogether educational to watch and see as a part of your stint in Korea.
For more normal types, you meet those at work or around your general living area. Lots of nice people around. Just be a good person, use good manners, and be kind. Don't be too shy.
For weekend fun, just head to Hongdae or even Geckos. Throngs of people around to meet. Have no fear! Get a couple of your buddies and head out for a night. Another secret is the Daehangno area. You can't walk into Coffee Bean there without being vastly outnumbered by gorgeous uni-aged women: 3 to 1. Daehangno is at the intersection of maybe 3 or 4 universities, including a branch of a modeling university. The area's not nearly as big as Hongdae, but a good place to hang out. I'm getting too old, and have met my lady, so I just pass on directions to the younger guys and say, "GO GET 'EM!"
You look like a young guy. If your Korean is even somewhat good, you can meet loads of nice ladies, I bet. |

Seriously, who are you? Why don't you state your job title and where're you're from first.
Trying to turn this into a contest? |
