They often do testing at the beginning of the year to determine studnets' levels. It's actually not such a bad idea.

The constructivist learning model says, in part, that you need to know what your students know, so you can move them forward from where they are.

I often give tests on the second day, and sometimes the first.

Exactly. Why not do it in the math period? No, sorry that's too obvious Laughing

I can empathise with you. One time I had a really fun end of semester activity planned, but no the students just had to go and do P.E.
There have also been other occasions where my class has been cancelled so the kids can do other things.

Because the various math classes happen at various times and they like to have all the students write it at the same time.

What do you think the math teachers think of having their lessons interrupted every month so students can all take the government listening tests at the same time?

ilovebdt gets a lollipop. ilovebdt actually understood what my problem was. Why are you testing kids in math during my ENGLISH class period? Why not use their MATH class time to test them??

At least I was told in advance about this absolutely logical testing time.

If it's a government test they want the students all to take it at the same time so that students who take it in the morning cannot tell students who take it in the afternoon what is on it, thereby potentially interfering with the results. Why do you think they all do the government English listening tests at the same time?

I guess it was the bit in the title about the timing, as in second day, that lead two of your three respondents astray...

I didn't see your reply before I posted my reply. Where do you teach? Do you teach at a middle school or high school? I teach at an elementary school. The students have math at the same time with their homeroom teachers. If this was middle school or high school I probably wouldn't have a problem.

You are right. Your response and the other responses made sense for me of why the test was today but why during my classtime remains a bit of a mystery.

I've read two posts today about their classes being cancelled. WTF? Take your free time and read a book or something.

Yeah, I teach at a combined middle / high school. I could see your point at elementary school, too.

Haha...

I did read a book....during the SIX hours I had after my classes ended. My classes are usually set so I teach one grade level a day. So today I taught 2 out of my 3 5th grade classes and that just starts thing off on the wrong foot for me.
