SYNOPSIS:
This is a new concept in Korea. It is called and English Apartment.
Basically this is what happens. Koreans buy an apartment and part of the deal is they get free English lessons in the complex. There are 3 classrooms within the complex and teachers are scheduled with classes between the hours of 10-6pm Mon -Fri.
They are also encouraged to be seen around the complex and say hi, how are you etc. to their neighbors. Yes you will be living in one of these apartments and they are fantastic. 32 pyeong! Brand new and fully furnished. There is no option for living off site here and part of your job is to be seen outside of the classroom also. There will be two native speakers and 1 gyopo teacher hired here. We would prefer a couple.

Weird!, 3.0 is a good wage though. 32 pyeong isn't too shabby as well.

Weird!!!!

Is this even legal? Can they register their English apartments with education ministry? Can they sponsor visas? etc. etc.?

(numbers are mine)

1. Notice the two sentences I numbered. Seems like you will be "teaching English" 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

2. Again "no option for living off site and PART OF YOUR JOB IS TO BE SEEN OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM AS WELL" That sounds like you are expected to socialize with your students during your off hours as well. No thanks. Nice salary...but for 3 million I'm betting that regardless of your stated working hours that you will be doing a lot of "overtime" (unpaid). In other words you can never relax and always have to be "on".

Not to mention the legality of this offer...as another poster asked.

I wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole.

Could be a cool gig for someone that likes teaching and wants to be more involved with his community. If you just want to go to your hole and annonymously drown in soju after work, that might not go over so well. As anywhere, you'd have to set boundaries and stick to them. Probably a huge opportunity to teach private lessons too.

I'm sure there is a way to make it legal. This IS Korea.

Sounds scary to me. I can just imagine you one Saturday afternoon wanting to go shopping and them telling you, "No, you must be seen around here!"

I wouldn't do this for a 5.0 mil a month. Of course, if you don't care about having a life or any free time....have at 'er. Laughing

it certainly isn't suitable for someone who enjoys being paid for every English word they speak. but, not everyone has retarded social skills
for someone who enjoys being social it would be perfect.
my friends don't pay me to hang out with them.

After further review of their website:

You must have an F2, F5 or F4 visa to work in this program. This is an English Apartment. One of the first in Korea. You will be living in a 32 pyeong apartment within a newly built complex. The classroom is inside the complex. You will be teaching Kindy - Adults. 40 hours a week. 3.0MIL YOU MUST LIVE AT THE APARTMENT COMPLEX 2 Native teachers 1 Gyopo teacher

That's a pretty important piece of info to leave out of a job ad. It's almost like they want you to send your resume and pic before they tell you, huh?

Shared housing? No, thanks. I like my privacy.

Teaching 40 hours a week? No, thanks. I'd be dead tired after teaching 8 hours per day (8 classes).

this is completely legit b/c of the visa required...sounds like an attempt to eliminate home schools and for some guys to make money off the resident visa folk...screw it... if you have an F-2, F-4 or F-5, you are better off making a home school and paying the 1.5 million a month (no deposit in suwon for 32 pyoung) for rent and earn 6+million on your own by teaching in your own home. the apt alone is worth it if you're broke with a family, but keep in mind every hour you teach, someone else will be making the same or more per hour as you are. if you want a nice apt and no risk, then take it, but i would rather work start my own apartment biz. 6 hours a day at just 50k an hour is 6 million. you'll be teaching the entire neighborhood for peanuts. hogwans charge about 15k per hour per student on average...4 kids in a class for an hour = 60k an hour and parents love it, plus they will pay more for the convenience of sending kids to school in their own complex...Don't buy into it.

I'm definitely wary of this job post but I'm interested in how it would work out. What kind of time commitment the residents would expect from the teacher during the supposed non working hours and is this basically a wink wink nod nod way of having uber cheap private lessons.

I wonder if the residents would settle for a rotating visit to each apartment. Each day I could visit a different family or apartment resident and have a meal with him/her/them and (hopefully) have them pay/cook the meal.

So if anyone ends up taking this job or knows of someone who will, please share the experiences por favor.

That's an interesting job post. I was thinking recently if this kind of thing would get started.

The funny thing is, anyone can see the potential for it to turn into a nightmare.

Imagine, the early riser neighbour rings your doorbell at 6:30am. "Hey English teacher let's go for an early hike up the hill! It'll be great for your health!" Then the 10 to 6 thing. Last class student says oh you must come with me to the wonderful kalbi restaurant (an hours drive away). Then after saying goodbye to your last visitor for the night, Heavy drinking neighbour rings your doorbell...

BUT as everyone knows F visa people can leave jobs whenever they want. It would be interesting to know how much of the BS is piled on with the employers presumably knowing this fact.

You like shared housing?

You speak Korean fluently enough to be social with your neighbors?

Your neighbors (the Koreans who live next to you) are your friends?

Confused How do you get a native speaking couple who are on a F-2s or F-5s?
