So my girlfriend and I want to get away from Seoul next weekend for a couple of days. Any suggestions for a nice place to visit, she's left it up to me even though she's Korean! |

If you're looking for something cultural and scenic, Hahoe Maeul (near Andong) and Gyongju can't be a bad choice, but it will be a long journey. |

Chuncheon is nice, too. About a two hour bus ride from Seoul. |

I like the East Sea--Gangneum or Sokcho. It's cold yet, but the sea is a beautiful blue and you can get a nice cheap yogwon on a beach and listen to the waves crashing. Lotsa purty little shells on the sandy beach, and you can go to a restaurant and eat scallops and oysters and whatnot. |

has anybody ever gone to a place like Sokcho and rented a car to toil around the countryside?
just wondering how much it would cost. I got an int drivers license while in the states. sounds like fun to go for a drive in the country instead of relying on buses etc |

I'd recommend one of two places, depending on your transportational (?)situation.
If you have wheels, Gang-Hwa-do (not Gang-Won-do, although there are nice places there too), where you can get a nice little "pension" for 40-50,000w. There is a lot of nice coastline, some old "UNESCO Heritage Sites", lots of green space, with excellent seafood restaurants (I actually don't care for seafood, but my wife was in heaven).
If you don't have wheels, you can get to Danyang by train, a quaint little town where you can check out some caves (which are lit and have wooden paths/stairs throughout) and a little ways away by bus, you can check out the most impressive temple (or I should say complex of temples, shrines, etc) I've seen in Korea. You get off the bus and walk up a very steep hill as you pass buildings which are quite impressive. I've forgotten the name of this temple, but I'm sure another poster knows (a little help?). |

yep, Ganghwa-do is cool. Great place to chill for a weekend and very easy to get to. You can even stop off in Gimpo on the way and see North Korea and it's propaghanda village. |

"Hey baby, we're going to Sokcho for the weekend. By the way, do you mind if this stranger from Dave's comes along with us?" |

A stranger is simply a friend yet to be made.
The vast majority of people are worth befriending, in my experience.
1-2% shouldn't dictate how one behaves toward the bulk of others, IMO. |
