I am just curious as to how many people on the board here are like me and just NOT planning on heading back to the good ol' USA (or Canada) at the completion of their contracts. If so what are your reasons for not going back? Where do you plan on going next? And any other plans you might have.
Mine are this:
Reasons for not going back -
1. No job opportunities
2. If you are over 35 (oh heck 30) your relationship possibilities are bleak if feasible at all.
3. Asia is way funner than anyplace I have been in America unless you live in southern Florida, "" California, or some cool places in the mountain States.
Where I'm going after this-
1. Probably Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam. They're all warmer and not so goofy like Korean culture.
Other plans-
I want to open my own restaurant someday. |

Hell no...as I get older I have come to appreciate the good things I left behind. Nothing worse than corn on your pizza and 65 channels of crappy Korean T.V. Clothing that is size "stickman" and the wonderful feeling of staring as I lurk through E-Mart looking for anything to eat.
-- I will be buying a house in Canada this summer. I am thankful to Korea for that. It will be smooth sailing after that.

Honestly bellum I asked for peoples feedback as to why they wouldn't be going back if that were the case. Lord knows there are plenty of things here that can get under your skin. I agree I miss much of what was left behind in America the only thing with me is that in the current state of our economy and job market I couldn't afford them if I wanted. Ramen noodles don't taste any better after college than they did while you were there. |

Having just returned from a 2 week home visit I think I will stay here for the present.
I would like to mention that there are PLENTY of job opportunities at home and most of them pay much more than being a teacher here so that is a non issue.
I have found my comfort zone.
I like what I do.
I like working with kids.
I like most of my co-workers (the rest I am simply indifferent to).
I like where I live.
I like being able to jet off to the beaches of South East Asia on a whim.
It is easy to pop off to China during the summer for a quick getaway.
yup... I will be here for a while yet...
plans are to return to North America when my daughter reaches grade 7. One of my major concerns here is the education system and it's inability to generate people with critical thinking skills (I am working to try to remedy that but I am only 1 person in a very large machine and there is a lot of cultural inertia to overcome). |

What you say is true but considering nearly anywhere you live in America you're going to to be paying nearly 2/3 of your income on rent and a automobile I would argue you'd do far better in savings here than you will there. |

I am married to Korea .
I can see the challenges here, but challenges are opportunities, so we'll see what the future will bring.
I am mor of an optimist, and i see that Korea is always improving itself, just give it a little time. |

I gather you're not interested on hearing opinions from English, Scottish or Irish teachers? |

New Zealand possibly ...
But seriously, I realised that as soon I as hit submit. I could of edited my email but I knew someone would be sharp enough to point out my error. Ho hum. |

I find it likewise, adding there are tons of great beaches in South Korea for May through October. |

I gather that X-man specifically requires the views of North American teachers because that's where he's from and is most knowledgeable about. Although not a North American myself, it's nothing to get all PC about. |

I didn't have ANY intentions on coming home, but things changed abruptly, but I can say this....
The next time I leave here....I am never coming back, ever again. |
