I'm renewing my contract with my public school in Incheon and I was wondering if I had to actually go on a visa run or if my school could simply extend it for a year? My co-teacher says that the school can just extend it but I contended that I would need to obtain my visa from outside the country. Was I correct? Does a person only do a visa run if their visa is expiring AND if they are changing jobs?

Not sure on that one.

I'd call the Seoul Immigration office if I were you. They have English Speaking Staff who are very knowledgable and helpful.

I'd make the call just to be sure as my High School officials thought they knew what they were doing when it came to my visa when I started here, but they didn't in the end...

The school can extend it for a year. You don't nee to leave the country. If I remember correctly, i didn't even have to leave my house.
I'm pretty sure i just signed a form and my school took it down to immi.

If you are renewing at the same school you do NOT have to make a visa run.

You need to apply for an extension of your visa at the Incheon (not the airport) immigration office.

You will need:

your ARC
your passport
a copy of your new contract with termination date clearly shown AND the principal's stamp on it
a copy of your SCHOOL'S registration paper
Guarentee paper from the school
30k won for the extension
application signed by you.

If you want a multi re-entry permit you should do it at the same time.
Simply tick the extra box at the top of the application paper and add another 50k won to the cost.

It takes about 20 minutes after you reach the counter to process, stamp the back of your ARC and send you on your way.
