Hello
I recently reinstalled Windows XP for a clean slate. But a problem has cropped up.

My internet card/thing is not recognized now. I have a broadband connection and the green light is on where i plug the cord in.

My BIOS recognizes a LAN being present but Windows does not.

I have tried to reinstall Windows XP several times but it is still not recognized.

I opened my computer up and the network thing is on the motherboard which means I don't know which drivers I would need to install. And when I do the hardware search thing, it does not recognize any new hardware.

So what do I do now?

I thought of buying a new network card but I would rather not. Or I thought maybe of buying a copy of Windows Vista but I am not sure the same problem will not occur.

Lastly, I bought this computer second-hand so I have no idea of any of the specs.

Please help me as I am dangerously close to drop kicking my PC out my motherf*cking window.

Thanks

Open your case and look at the label or the biggest chip you can find on the card or sometimes on the edge of the card will give you model/brand. If its an intergrated one then you need to know the model of your motherboard.

You may need drivers for the card...does it recognize the card and give an error. Go to:

1: Start
2: Control Panel
3: Performance and maintanence
4: system
5: hardware
6: device manager

Check and see if the network card has a red "X". If there is an "x" then you know you need drivers (probably).

PS:...Network cards are so so so so so cheap. Just change it and save some trouble.

As mentioned, it's just the mainboard LAN driver. Find out what mainboard it is, and we'll help you out. Guessing you don't have the mainboard install disk, which should have come with your comptuer.

You can just buy one and put it in if you absolutely can't make it work. Is your computer a brand name like "DELL" or something. They have driver packages for downloading on the net. It is easy to get the drivers if you know what computer you have.

I checked the motherboard as suggested and found the following markings

MSI 7143 ver 1.0
915p2-Neo V
N1998

So, I went to the MSI site and tried to download the drivers for the lan at the following address

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=655&kind=1

I then went to the Device Manager and went to my Ethernet card and tried to install the drivers provided for my ethernet card. Nothing.

What do I do?

Thanks.

Use the live update that will install for you...

Just click here:

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_file_record.php?folder=4&kind=1&name=LiveUpdate.zip

(Sometimes it is very slow..just keep trying)

unzip and install the program and then run the program to install automatically.
