Not to sound too naive, but it's truly laughable that they can operate so openly as to have "*beep* bake sales" when just a couple of years ago there was that sparkplug police captain who claimed that prostitution was illegal in Korea and that she was going to drive it out of the Miari District. |

You have to see in the evening when the alley emits this beautiful pink glow. |

Alas, I must remain outside what surely are the gates of heaven itself.
Anyone knows what the penalty is for any unlucky non-Korean who finds himself in an off-limits area? Rubber bullets? Mace? Jail? |

Interesting articles- thanks, peppermint.

``As there is widespread belief that foreign workers spread AIDS and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Korean customers are being driven away, said Chon Kyong-bong, a brothel owner who conducted business in Miari for more than two years. He is serving as the head of the owners committee that adopted the resolution of not accepting foreigners. |
Perhaps if they're really concerned about the spread of AIDS, they could bar any Korean man who has visited prostitutes in South and Southeast Asia. But then, that would be blaming adjoshi. Far better to pander to locally-held prejudices and "widespread beliefs". |

My favorite part of the Times's article:
``Although we feel bad for the migrant workers who are here in a foreign land, we have to think of the health of our employees, who have weak immune systems since they drink a lot of alcohol while working, Chon told The Korea Times.
To paraphrase Shaggy (or maybe Tiger Beer), like...wow!
If they really care about the health of their employees (which they obviously don't), why allow them to drink so much while on the job?
That is easily the most idiotically vexing statement I've read that hasn't come from the mouth of someone named Bush or Rumsfeld.

I'd be cool if one of you mods could integrate the various threads on the Miari matter.
About time the helios thread got some competition...shows where your minds are, you dirty birds. |

Proprietors of brothels in Hawolgok-dong, northern Seoul, commonly known by its nickname of an obscure origin "Miari Texas Village," have come to a new business policy of denying service to migrant workers who they look at as potential transmitters of SARS. |
So this newpaper says that only migrant workers are off-limits. Most migrant workers are from southeast Asia are they not??
Westerner's arent' a health risk are they?
I've never been to Texas Village but I don't see why they would turn a westerner away.
Anybody else got these kinda balls to go for a visit?

Wish we could, but the board software only allows us to *split* threads. We can't merge, or move individual posts from one thread to another. It's a major annoyance.
The several "Helios" threads would be great to have combined, to be sure. One option is to lock all but the main one. |

Here's the most recent Miari-visit account of a poster named "Douglas" on another board (the URL of which will remain my dirty little secret, hehe).
Just want to confirm what "assetman" said. I went to Miari over the holiday weekend and, unfortunately, it was closed to foreigners. (I'm American.) As you leave exit 10, there are five or six alleyways leading off to your right. Well, all but the last one had banners overhead saying that foreigners were not allowed. The ajumas at those alley entrances would not look at or speak to me. When I got to the last entrance, there was no banner, but the ajuma put her hands on my stomache and pushed me back -- not in a threatening way, just her way of saying that I couldn't come in there.
Anyone know what is up with this, and how long it will be before we can get back in there?
It was a disappointing thing to see. |

WSGForums, right? Come on, Seoultrader, this is the 21st century. There's no such thing as 'secret' URLs.
What I assumed about this - that the brothelownerscum were wanting to ban brown people (ie SE Asian migrant workers in particular) - seems to be backed up by the Times/Herald pieces. Of course all foreigners are evil, so any non-Korean gets included under the umbrella.
Not that I care, other than on principle. If you have to pay for it, you're pathetic, I reckon. |

Hahaha...I thought it'd take at least a day till someone figured it out. Totally agree with you, it's pathetic to have to pay for it...but oh so fun to WANT to pay for it

What do you think the odds are that someone speaking a certain language...say, Japanese, would have absolutely no trouble entering one of these places (assuming they were sick of the upscale Seoul karaoke clubs and wanted to "go slumming")--my guess is that "foreigner" would be most welcome.
I imagine their signs should have been more accurately put: "No big-noses and southeast Asians allowed." |
