You have come to the right place.

The beauty of art galleries in Seoul are their websites. 99% of them are in English and give good directions. the 1% is usually the stuff that is really worth seeing, but as you dig deeper by asking questions at the galleries, you can find maps and directions to the more obscure, less western marketed galleries.

Heres are my picks:

http://www.triadnewmediagallery.com/
http://www.ssamziespace.com/eng/main.asp
http://www.bitforms.com/index.php#id=34&num=1
http://seoulmoa.seoul.go.kr/html/eng/index.jsp
http://www.rodin.co.kr/
http://artsonje.org/eng/
http://doart.co.kr/english/gal_ex.html
http://galleryloop.com/
http://www.daelimmuseum.org
http://www.moca.go.kr
http://www.arariogallery.co.kr/
http://www.heyri.net/contents/english/e_profile.asp
http://kukjegallery.com./eng/main.php
http://artsonje.org/eng/
http://doart.co.kr/english/gal_ex.html
http://ganaartgallery.com/
http://totalmuseum.org/home/index.php

For now theres a great exhibition on at the Rodin gallery called the realm of the 3.5 Dimension. its hard to explain what it is you really have to see it for yourself, that has just started in March.

Bitforms gallery generally are host to some great works and is renowned around the world but they are still deciding upon there next exhibition.

In Hongdae check out the Alternative Gallery Loop, Ssamzie space is also renowned and worth keeping an eye as is Project Space Zip.

I saw an incredible exhibition at Daelim recently called "Cybernetic Sensibility" but I think may have finished.

Oh and the Rene Margritte exhibition at the Seoul Museum of Art should not go undiscovered.

Otherwise take the subway to Chongro-ku or Samcheong-Dong. This area is jam packed with galleries at every angle. Hyundai gallery and Kukje Gallery opposite the old temple are usually worth a visit.

In Insa-Dong you can see the Alternative Space Pool which holds some pretty cutting edge stuff. Or Do-Art gallery.

The architecture of the Samsung (leeum) gallery in Iteawon is incredible although the 10,000 ticket price for the traditional art is a little heavy and the contemporary section is a little light but definitely still worth the walk up the hill...

Others to consider but i have yet to visit are the Total Museum and Gana Art Center in Pyungchang-dong.

If all fails head to Japan.

Phew, Hope this helped. Check back and let me know if you have any luck! Smile

Seoul is pretty good for galleries. The ones I like are: Kim's Gallery ("classic" photography in that they show old b/w documantary stuff, or stuff like Man Ray which is being shown now if you go), Gallery Now (contemporray photography), Lux Gallery (contemporary photography) on Insadong. Theres also a small one near Galeria Dept store. I forgeot the name but if you go to galleria and enter Rodeo Road then follow it to its other entrance and go straight across the road you will find it. They have had Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibition, Ansel Adams.

Pick up the Korea Herald, theres always a list of exhibitions going on around Seoul.

Gallery Lumiere isn't it? It's small, but they get some quality contemporary stuff, as well as classic photography.

Leeum's well worth it for my money, there's a permanent display of Western and Korean modern art , complete with a Matthew Barney, Cremaster video on continuous loop. That and there's always some interesting new exhibition on.

You're supposed to book ahead for Leeum, but I always tell them that I emailed them and didn't get a response. It was true the first few times, but after that I figured they don't really care.

Just be prepared for loads of screaming kids whose parents brought them into the world but can't be bothered with making them behave. I was quite pleased though to actually see a Korean lady spanking her daughter right outside the Louvre exhibit last Sunday. Kids today don't get enough corporal punishment. That's why they are as mean as snakes, bothering me and other people in museums and restaurants. Control your kids people!!! Evil or Very Mad

Leeum. On permanent display in the modern art gallery. They also had a special exhibit on of his latest and last Cremaster, but that's long gone.

Leeum is excellent. They have a print Gursky in their collection. I had never seen one outside a book and it makes an impression.
