So class was over and I was gathering up my stuff to head out for lunch when Ms Lee came up to the front with a question. She had already told me she had shipped her daughter off to Jochiwon to school last weekend (and had puffy eyes from crying to show for it and that that was why she had been wearing dark glasses in class), and now she wanted to keep me posted on developments. The newsflash of the day is that Daughter has been experiencing constipation. Is that the right word for expression of it? Yes, I said, constipation is the right word to express that problem. Then she asked how to express that Daughter had 'solved her constipation problem' and I said that that was probably as good as any way to express it.

So we moved on to the discussion of toilets. As I know, there are two kinds of toilets. (Drawing on the whiteboard). The sit toilet (to which I suggested 'sit-down toilet' as an alternative) and...and (drawing)...what is the express for this one? As I know, foreigners have difficulties with this kind. We call this one a squat toilet. Squat toilet? What is squat?

So I demonstrated. That is bend? No, I bend my legs, I bend my fingers, but right now I am squatting. Since the top half of my body weighs considerably more than the bottom half, I am less than steady at the rare times I squat. To keep from toppling over, I put my hand on the dust tray. Down comes Ms Lee to join me in squatting. Ahhh. This is squatting. I see.

So now I'm done with my demonstration of squatting and am ready to come back up. I put too much weight on the dust tray. The white board--4' tall and 9' long--- came crashing down like a guillotine. It missed my foot by less than an inch. I NEARLY LOST MY TOES DEMONSTRATING 'TO SQUAT' TO MS LEE. Shocked

So be careful out there folks! A one-year teaching 'career' is not worth your toes.

PS: Don't you like how I started each paragraph with 'so', just like a REAL Dave's poster? I feel so with it!

I've done (arguably) the most dangerous job in the world with never more than cuts and bruises. It took teaching in Korea, playing with a bunch of thirteen-year-old middle school girls, for me to break my clavicle! Confused LOL
How about hazard pay for teachers?

Or perhaps the people working/living in the building behind it. Laughing

Good story, but can you elaborate a little bit on this part:

I just don't understand the reasoning behind it!

After winter break my co-teach was telling me about her son's botched circumcision (a word I just taught her)and she decided this for hangman. After awhile she decided to give the students (all boys high school) a hint and drew a nice picture of a shriveled member on the board. I have a picture of it but I don't want to post it for fear of being baninated.
It was done on the white board and I almost died laughing so can I be included in this discussion?

Keep this under your hat: I was hiding her identity. She's really a major, and I thought if I called her Ms, no one would recognize her.

Oh yes! A story about a botched circumcision gets you into this conversation...and should work to get you into many others.

My question to you: Just HOW botched was it? Has little Seok-Min become Soo-Mi?

And yes, I can vouch for Mr. Monkey being out of action for weeks and weeks because of his playground stunt. Middle-aged men should never show off for middle school girls.

So how do you actually use a squat-o-matic? I always worry that I'm gonna get it wrong and end up with egg on my face. Or something.

Diagrams would be helpful.

Just replace "Japanese" with "Korean" and you'll get the picture. I think my post should be made a sticky... because this is a sticky subject!

Yata, why do you feel the need to chronicle every little thing that happens to you on this site? You should get a blog if thats what you are into.

What quality posters?

Ya-ta's posts are great, and I too enjoy reading them. You need to lighten up.
